Red ruled the Amazon India Fashion Week

Yes, it's over. And the fashion world can now heave a sigh of relief. The first-ever Amazon India Fashion Week (AIFW) ended Sunday night - five days of fashion frenzy, among other things, coming to an end, until next season of course. There was everything you'd expect from a fitting finale - an explosion of designers and much revelry. Except this time, all of them were part of the same show.

Themed "Crafts of India", the finale had a set resembling that of a Rajasthani palace (Why Rajasthan when it's crafts of "India" is another story altogether!) and the music was instrumental with plenty of dhol-bajaoing to add to the mood. There were a grand total of 25 designers with pretty much everyone from Rohit Bal, Suneet Verma, Raghavendra Rathore and Ritu Kumar to Rahul Mishra, Wendell Rodricks and Anamika Khanna making two to three pieces to strut on the ramp. It was a wonderful sight indeed to have almost the entire fashion industry come together for the show that also marked 25 years of FDCI's fashion weeks in Delhi. Things started with Western wear, moved onto ethnic wear and ended with bridal couture, thereby scaling the repertoire of every participating designer. It was expected to be quite a colourful affair but the theme was restricted to red, orange and pink. And the end result was red, orange, red, pink and red. Yes, red was everywhere. They might as well have the called the show "50 shades of red" and no one would have had an issue.

To be fair, AIFW did prepare everyone for the red overload much in advance. Each of the five days had the colour sprinkled in bits and pieces. Some designers fully embraced it and some chose to use it judiciously. But red was definitely omnipresent. From Nikasha, Anju Modi and JJ Valaya on day one, Hemant & Nandita on day two, Tanvi Kedia, Paromita Banerjee, Anupama Dayal, Pankaj and Nidhi and 11:11 CellDSGN on day three to Sahil Kochhar, Pia Pauro, and Sonal Dubal on day four and the grand finale on day five of course it was red, more red and some more red everywhere.

It's an unusual colour that's always been the first choice only for bright summers and bridal wear so far. To have an entire fashion week in a way celebrate the shade and welcome it unabashedly for the winter season does make for a welcome change. Isn't the first rule of fashion to constantly break rules anyway?

AIFW maybe have thrown the gauntlet and announced, not officially of course, red as the colour to boot for the coming autumn-winter season but the real test will begin much later. Considering that shows alone don't make a trend work, it'll be interesting to see if red manages to work its charm into the hearts and closets of the crowd. Or will black jackets once again manage to take the colour out of the winter? As a wise man once said, time will tell.
