Five things we loved about Sabyasachi's couture show

Highly anticipated things rarely live to expectations. Cynicism or experience, that's just how things go in fashion. Trust Sabyasachi to break the norm, though. As he presented the opening show for the first-ever Amazon India Couture Week last night, things were looking and feeling different. And sometimes different is good, fashionably good. You've raised the bar Sabyasachi; we hope the other designers have upped the ante now.

The setting

Taking inspiration from the bird quail and naming his collection with its Indian name, Bater, the designer set the mood for the show with a dungeon-like set that looked eerie in the beginning but slowly worked its way into your mind as a dark, secretive place that soon evaporated into smoke, literally giving way for the models to sashay down as torn rugs hung on top of empty glass cabinets placed on the ramp.

Music

Starting out with the sound of the bird, it soon turned into a melancholic orchestra that alternated between high and low pitches while maintaining its vengeful tone. The cherry on top of course was the instrumental Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan from Raj Kapoor's classic Mera Naam Joker that further elevated the mood.

Dresses

Yes, you read that right. How often have we had dresses and gowns showcased for a couture show? That too from Sabyasachi? Yes, there were the usual saris and Indian wear but what stood out more were the knee length cowl-necked shift dresses and full-length gowns with metallic sequined embellishments. Such a delightful break from the usual fare- experimentation isn't officially dead, yet.

Accessories

Partnering with Christian Louboutin was a smart idea, indeed. The international designer brought in his own sensibility and matched it perfectly with that of the collection. Studded clutches and bags along with embellished and feathered shoes beautifully complemented the glittering clothes. And who can miss those trademark red soles anyway?

No showstoppers

There's nothing better than a fashion show that actually lets the clothes do the talking. Not relying on any showstopper, Sabyasachi confidently focused everyone's attention on his collection that stood out solely on its own merit. To see him walk down the ramp in the end, with Christian Louboutin on his side, was quite an endearing sight for the two completely deserved all the applause.
