New episode of Game of Thrones has spawned two great fan theories

The first episode of Game of Thrones season seven was thrilling and met rave reviews. It also successfully brought all fans up to speed, especially the ones who did not manage to indulge in a rerun of all that has happened to the hundreds of equally important characters on the show.

We got to see Jon Snow living up to true Stark potential, as all of the North unanimously accepted him as their leader now. We see Sansa Stark take a new form: fearless, confident and wise. We see Cersei moving on from the death of her children to vowing to fight for her keep. We see Daenerys finally setting foot on Westeros – her family’s castle in Dragonstone. We see Samwell Tarly cleaning up after old maesters in Oldtown, and managing to glean some White Walker research. We see the Hound, Arya Stark, dragons and the weirdly funny Grejoy uncle.

We also see pop singer Ed Sheeran, for some reason. (Fun fact: Sheeran’s cameo on GoT earned him so much trolling, he has quit Twitter for now.)

Most of all, what we all saw – after the episode – was an onslaught of Easter eggs, fan theories and raging speculation. Here are the two most popular theories doing the rounds:

Jorah Mormont

First of all, everyone probably caught a glimpse of Ser Jorah Mormont in the first episode, or at least his highly disfigured and diseased arm - you'd recall he suffers from "greyscale". What people may not have noticed was that in the same episode, we also see the cure for Mormont’s disease being mentioned. That’s right.

Reddit user Beastmodekait managed to pause the episode at the precise moment and discovered this brilliant detail. While half of this page from the book Sam was reading is cut off, a careful read and some guesswork makes it all too possible to get a rough idea of what it says, and more importantly implies.

The chapter is about Dragonglass and its uses, the only known effective weapon against the White Walkers. What is also written on the page is that Dragonglass can also be used as a possible cure for illnesses and diseases when ingested. Though one really can’t see what disease is being referred to on the page. Wait, there is more.

As was pointed out by several other comments on the Reddit thread, the only person known to be cured of greyscale (well not exactly cured but at least see that the progression of the disease was halted) in the Game of Thrones universe, is Shireen Baratheon, the daughter of Stanis Baratheon. What more, Shireen lived at Dragonstone, where we definitely know there is a Dragonglass mine.

The evidence is circumstantial, but it does make for great fan theory.

Sansa Stark

The eldest Stark daughter, as we have seen in six seasons of the show, has gone through a great deal. She was engaged to an arrogant prince who abused her (Prince Geoffery). Her father was beheaded on his orders. She was then married off to a disfigured, albeit a very clever dwarf (Tyrion). What more, she was raped on her nupital bed by a monstrosity of a human being (Ramsay Bolton).

But Sansa has survived and risen like a phoenix from the embers. The new Sansa is stronger, cunning and fearless. She also feels more cold - something we all witnessed when she ruthlessly played Lysa Arryn (who Petyr Baelish killed) and sent the heir of Vale, Robin, away.

But her newfound straightforwardness and strong will may spell trouble. She openly questions Snow's decisions, and doesn't shy away from pointing out his weak judgment.

Do these things remind us of someone else? Yes! Cersei Lannister.

Several Twitter users pointed out that Sansa at present looks more and more like Cersei from previous seasons - before she had her hair chopped off.

The similarities don't end there. Cersei may have always been blinded by her love for her son Geoffery, but she did have a warm spot for Sansa. No matter how cruel the prince was towards her, Sansa found respect for Cersei's courage and cunning.

As Sansa asks Jon to listen to her and not make the same mistakes their father and brother made, they receive a message from Cersei Lannister asking them to forfeit or suffer the consequences. Jon ignores Cersei’s threat. But Sansa warns him all the same, “You’re the military man, but I know her. If you’re her enemy, she’ll never stop until she’s destroyed you. Everyone who’s ever crossed her she’s found a way to murder.”

“You almost sound as if you admire her,” replies Jon. “I learned a great deal from her,” says Sansa.

Is Sansa turning into Cersei? There is more. Sophie Turner, the actor who plays Sansa's role, said in an interview with Refinery 29 that Sansa’s hair reflects the “people she’s learning from, or mimicking, or inspired by.”

Makes you think, eh?
