How Priyanka Chopra is helping her mother produce films

As Priyanka Chopra strengthens her base in the United States, Madhu Chopra ensures that her daughter is still relevant back home and is connected to Bollywood. One way is with the production banner Purple Pebble Pictures, which promotes regional cinema as well as new talent both on and behind the screen. Started in 2015, the banner has produced four films so far. It recently won the National Award for Best Film with last year’s Marathi production Ventilator.

For Madhu Chopra, who runs the family business of cosmetic surgery, film production was diving into an unknown territory. “I can look into business but production is so much art and creativity,” she says. Her daughter’s experience and guidance, often delivered via phone, comes in handy. “She has been my mentor,” she says. “Not a day passes when we don’t converse. I don’t hesitate in telling her 'Babe, I don’t know this, how to go about it? And she puts me in contact with somebody who’d do so. She has become a hands-on producer.”

With Priyanka now balancing a career in both television and movies, Madhu Chopra praises her daughter’s ability to still devote time to PPP by reading scripts and sitting for narrations.

“I am blown away by how she finds time to do this,” she says.

The mother-daughter bond has only grown since the passing of Ashok Chopra in 2013. “I knew I would stand by her and she by me, but I never imagined working together in a respectful manner like this,” she says.

Next up for PPP is Pahuna, a Nepalese and Sikkimese film which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival recently.
