Why Manish Malhotra's show was a befitting finale to couture week

When you want fashion, you go to other designers. But when you want fashion combined with big screen-like grandeur, you go to Manish Malhotra. The designer, who completes 25 years as a costume designer and ten years of his label this year, was certainly in his elements as he closed this season of the couture week with a show that was awe-inspiring in every sense.

One of the most obvious colour choices for couture, red was Manish's biggest armour. And he used it smartly by keeping it away from Indian wear and using it instead for ballroom flared skirts and men's velvet jackets instead. His set too overflowed with the shade.

Unexpected elements

He sprung up quite a few surprises too. There was lots of brown for instance in the show which isn't a shade one would expect from a couture collection. The show was predominantly Western couture - a feat Manish would be most proud about. Adding to all this were masks, pointy wristbands and a whole lot of drama.

Glittering shoes

It's generally tough to distract the eye from overwhelming clothes but the shoes here managed quite well. They were no Christian Louboutin, yes but were sparkling enough to steal the thunder. And not just women, even men got to glitter around.

Floral motifs

Having experimented enough with this trend, you'd wonder if there was anything more left to be done for our designers. Manish proved everyone wrong though; his floral motifs were all colourful, big and funky. Just the way we like them.

When the world's most beautiful woman is your showstopper, there's not much that can go wrong. Looking breathtaking in a gold and Marsala outfit, Aishwarya sizzled like never before. Full marks to Manish for choosing a not-so-obvious colour to close the show as well.
