Why Dr Kalam will continue to inspire generations of scientists

Dr Kalam was a scientist who firmly believed in results. His success in R&D was due to his ability to overcome failure with conviction. His motive force was perseverance and determination that made several ambitious national projects see the light of the day. Soon after Dr Kalam took over the Defence Research and Development Laboratory, he transformed the image and perception of the institution among the masses into a performing organisation. The general message that trickled down with Dr Kalam at the helm of affairs was that no task is ever impossible; it is only a matter of reasonable time. The remarkable way in which he associated success with ambitious programmes of national importance made every citizen proud of Dr Kalam as a national leader. Thus patriotism was tacitly nurtured among Indians as he fostered technological excellence in critical areas that warranted indigenous development. It was during his leadership that several scientific programmes reached their zenith, much to the surprise of many developed nations who thought it was a formidable task for a country with a colonial past. His unique style of functioning made hierarchy redundant in scientific laboratories. Notwithstanding his high designation, he would directly approach each and everyone in the organisation, including those in the lowest rung ranks. This not only removed hierarchical barriers and improved efficiency but also instilled a sense of belongingness among all in the organisation. His leadership in R&D organisations will continue to be a singularity, in terms of zero ego problem, zero prejudice, and zero snobbery. His ability to inspire, motivate and encourage fellow scientists made him a beloved boss in every organisation he worked for. His unbelievably down-to-earth and simple lifestyle has raised the bar of excellence and expectations of human qualities from scientific leaders. His simple lifestyle was a complete contrast to his professional achievements, an attribute that has embarrassed several high profile leaders occupying high positions in organisations.
