&lt;p id='p_1'&gt;Darjeeling witnessed massive protests starting June 8, with Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) members torching&amp;nbsp;police vehicles and pelting stones at police personnel who used teargas shells to disperse the mob. The GJM was protesting against West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's statement last week that Bangla&amp;nbsp;would be made compulsory for students up to class 10 in government schools across the state.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_2'&gt;Attempts were made to pacify the protesters by holding a&amp;nbsp;Cabinet meeting in the hills so as to make them feel important. But the gamble seemed to boomerang. Mamata Banerjee had stormed to power with the GJM's support in 2011, when her party had swept the Assembly&amp;nbsp;elections.&lt;/p&gt;
