Filmmaker Govind Nihalani on FTII deadlock: Politics of error are at play

Almost every major Indian artist has stressed upon the need for depoliticising important art and cultural institutes like the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) which have been instrumental in shaping this country's cinema.

The prolonged strike at India's premier film school makes one wonder if the establishment is actually serious about finding a long-term solution to the ongoing crisis at one of the world's finest film schools. All they seem to be doing is making an effort to ensure that the striking students are tired out and forced to go back to their classes. Let us not forget that those who go to the FTII are some of the most creative minds and they do not really enjoy missing out on their academics. They have a lot at stake.

We need right now is a very sympathetic approach from the government where they not just force their own viewpoint but also try to understand why the students want a change in the governing body and replacement of Gajendra Chauhan as the FTII chairman. It is not fair on the government's part not to acknowledge the concerns of the film school's student community and impose their decisions just because they are in power. Yes, the government does have a right to appoint a chairman and the governing council but does that mean that they can appoint just anyone? And also expect that their decisions should remain unopposed and unchallenged?

Several members of the film community have tried to break the deadlock between the establishment and the striking students but have not been able to succeed because this government is just not ready to listen to anyone.

Considering the fact that both sides are unwilling to move an inch, I feel it is high time that Gajendra Chauhan resigns himself. That is the only way that there would be a happy climax to this absurd drama.
