Twitter hails Mumbai Indians and Dhoni the real winners of IPL 8

Was the name "Mumbai Indians" strategically chosen? Those who had given the newly crowned Indian Premier League (IPL) champions its name perhaps knew that the term "Indians" would endear the team to the country's cricket enthusiasts. Add to that the blue jersey (Team India wears the same colour), and the association of India's "cricket god" Sachin Tendulkar with the franchise. If these were indeed efforts to become popular, and if they had paid off, the MI's second IPL victory at the Eden Gardens last night was the icing on the cake and one for its many fans to savour.

The historic stadium at the "City of Joy" proved to be lucky for the MI for the second time, with both their IPL triumphs having been accomplished at the same venue. For Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma, the ground provided fond memories to take home for the umpteenth time. Rohit was the captain when the MI won the IPL at the Eden Gardens in 2013. His individual record at the ground would rival those of Mohammad Azharuddin and VVS Laxman, the "Kings of Eden". Rohit not only scored a surreal 264 in a One Day International (ODI) match last year, he also hit his only IPL century here. He also got a Test century on debut at the Eden. On Sunday, Rohit put up a "man of the match" performance with a whirlwind 26-ball 50, setting the foundation for his team's victory.

With the legion of MI fans in the country and across the world breaking into a celebration, here is a look at the top tweets on MI's victory and the match generally:

But MI's fine victory does not, in any way, take credit away from its opponents, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and its skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The team has been one of the most prolific of the IPL, having reached the finals of the tournament six times. The team has set the standards in terms of its discipline and ruthless efficiency and Dhoni has led the side with great skill. If there was any talk of Dhoni, as a captain, being finished, his fans have come out strongly in his support. Here's a look at what the admirers of "Captain Cool" had to say on Twitter:
