Here's what online leaks tell us about the yet-to-launch Nokia 9

This has been Nokia’s year. Despite the fact that the once-ruler of the mobile devices market has been woefully late in terms of adapting to the market – going the Android way – the Finnish company, powered by HMD Global (the exclusive licensee of Nokia for mobile phones and tablets), is finally jumping on the Android bandwagon. That is if you completely drop those half-baked Nokia X-series smartphones that came with an Android-based operating system (OS) in 2014, from your consideration; and you should.

Earlier this year at the Mobile World Conference, Nokia announced the 3 smartphones (Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6) and a reboot of their classic 3310, a regular feature phone that is a novelty nostalgia product and nothing more.

But now, we have another device round the corner and it’s a big one: the yet-to-be launched Nokia 9. Thanks to a series of leaks and rumours, the world knows enough about the device without an official launch event. In fact, with the way things are going, they might not even need one anymore, because “surprise, surprise”, there have been more leaks.

Last week, a promotional photo and a video of the upcoming Nokia Android smartphone got leaked. It was tweeted by Evan Blass, a tech journalist and a professional “leaker” of tech info. What gave away the fact that Nokia 9 was part of it, was the presence of a phone with a dual camera setup. The photo also featured another unknown smartphone, that is quite possibly the Nokia 8, but more on that later.

Specs

And now we have actual images of the prototype. From what is already known the Nokia through leaks and rumours,  9 is expected to come equipped with a 13 Megapixel dual-lens rear camera setup with Carl Zeiss optics, and a 12-megapixel front-facing camera, something that the leaked images reaffirm.

Additionally, the Nokia 9 is expected to sport a 5.5-inch QHD OLED display, and is likely to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor coupled with 6GB RAM. The phone is also rumoured to run the Android 7.1.2 Nougat.

In terms of storage, the Nokia 9 is probably going to offer 64GB of internal storage. Also, the smartphone is supposed to come with a fingerprint scanner which is likely to replace the home button on the front.

While the new leaks don’t offer a whole lot of insight, but they do tell us a few things about the phone’s exterior. The smartphone in the photos is covered by a plastic box that covers entire body but the ports on the device which makes it impossible to judge the design.

The leaked press renders show that that the device come packed with a USB Type-C charging port placed at the bottom of the device, and a 3.5mm headphone jack as well. One can also guess that the phone is likely to have a 5.5 inch display, something that’s been a consistent speculation. The volume and power buttons are seen on the right edge of the device. These are all that the newly leaked images reveal about the upcoming phone.

Release and price

According to a Nokia Power User report, the Nokia 9 will probably see an official unveiling in the third quarter of this year; possibly a late-July/early-August launch event. The report also suggests that the new Nokia flagship device is likely to cost something around 749 Euros (roughly Rs 54,000) which is quite the heavy price tag. There are also rumours of a more expensive 128GB variant.

While a phone that expensive is not a big deal, Nokia, as an amateur player in the Android market better bring in the big guns, if they wish to survive. And even as the rumoured specs look pretty promising, is the public likely to invest that much into a Nokia device? After all, this isn't 2010 anymore.
