Vivo V7+ with 24-megapixel selfie shooter: Everything you want to know

Chinese smartphone maker Vivo on Thursday announced its new flagship, the V7+ at a launch event held in the financial capital of the country. The device is intended for consumers looking for a phone with a good front-facing camera.

This selfie-centric smartphone, however, is no slouch when it comes to other departments, and comes with impressive internals in a well-crafted body.

Here's all you need to know about Vivo's latest offering.

Specifications

On the outside, Vivo's V7+ is adorned by an IPS 'FullView' 5.99-inch HD (720x1440 pixels) 2.5D curved glass display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The display is covered with a sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 which is almost bezel-less (2.15mm bezels) owing to Vivo's pursuit of Samsung's S8 like "Infinity Display".

Under the hood, the smartphone comes packed with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM. The smartphone features 64GB of inbuilt storage, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB).

In terms of connectivity options, the phone includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.2 and the dual-SIM (Nano-SIM) device supports phone networks up to 4G VoLTE. Sensors on the smartphone include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, and a proximity sensor. The company has also included an AK4376A Hi-Fi Audio chipset which it claims will result in better quality audio output.

Keeping the lights on here is a 3225mAh battery pack.

Selfie centric device

By far, the biggest USP of the phone is its selfie centric hardware which even outshines the usually more powerful rear camera module.

The phone comes with a 16-megapixel rear camera with a f/2.0 aperture and dual-LED flash, which pales in comparison to the device's front shooter – a 24-megapixel front camera with a f/2.0 aperture, 1/2.78-inch sensor supplemented by what Vivo calls the "Moonlight Glow" soft selfie light.

This selfie camera goes in line with older phones from Vivo's stable that made a name for themselves because of high megapixel selfie cameras. However, the 24-megapixel camera on the V7+ looks more like a marketing gimmick than a feature that will appeal to consumers.

Having said that, the phone owing to the inclusion of the 24-megapixel sensor at the front does produce good results and comes with a number of software features that add to the charm of clicking selfies on the phone.

Price and availability

The  Vivo V7+ running the Funtouch OS 3.2 based on Android 7.1 Nougat is available in Gold, Matte Black, and Rose Gold colour variants and will not come cheap at Rs. 21,990. Pre-bookings for the V7+ will start on Thursday, September 7, and the phone will be available to consumers starting September 15.
