Readers tell us whether India should scrap Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan

When Pakistan throws diplomacy out the window - each time with a well-planned terror apparatus to bleed the Indian soil - it leaves little room for a permanent ceasefire, let alone peaceful negotiation. And despite the deplorable standard of living of its own citizens, Islamabad has, time and again, acted against their interests by choosing conflict over profitable business with New Delhi.

The chickens have come home to roost with the Uri attack, which has forced the common Indian to support calls for war despite facing economic challenges at home every day. So are Indians prepared to trade the Indus Waters Treaty for an all-out offensive against Pakistan?

The public opinion has certainly hit the roof - it is forced to revaluate terms like aman ki asha when India's security is repeatedly compromised by a neighbour less than half its size, with fewer resources.

Some citizens say being pragmatic is the key, but if the threat hurts Pakistan more than India, it's time to take the plunge.

Readers' verdict:

Satya Upadhyay: India should use indus water treaty as a pressure tactics, to impose cost on pakistan, the threat in itself is of deterrance compared to limited military options we possess in aftermath of uri attack.

Indus water treaty cancellation is dubious as how we will stop water from entering pakistan in short term is not possible option, pakistan must bear the cost of its terror soliciting in short time to regain the lost morale of indian army and to break the longtime tradition of coldplay in india's response since 26/11 and now pathankot and uri.

Md Sohail: YES WE SHOULD in order to isolate the country and to prevent any further escalation of this conflict into a conventional or nuclear war we should scrap this treaty and even if china does the same in retaliation it will not effect us that much because according to pact we use only 20% of the the water of that river.

Rajanikanta Misra: Yes, if it comes to that. But more intelligent ways are available to use water, achieve the desired consequences without scraping the treaty.

Sadam Baloch: the base camp of religious fundamentalists lies with in Pakistani institutions all of the institutions are poisoned with it. the religious fundamentalists are active strongly in education health intelligence agencies paki army religious and political parties and other private or public based institutions. so world need to know and understand that how a state can be handled. sacular forces like Baloch sindhies and pashtuns are highly effected and facing genocide and atrocities by such fundamentalists organizations with the supervision of state. the only solution is a long term solution. otherwise such a country will always be a threat to global peace.

Kevin Jacobson: We don't even have to scrap it.just use the water flowing through indian part to it's full potential for irrigation, dams, hydroelectric plants, etc then there'll be very little water left to flow to pak.
