When Mahatma went missing from Rs 2,000 note, Twitter seized the day

Unlike most of us who have spent hours standing in ATM queues and still not been lucky enough to lay our hands on the Rs 2,000 bill, some farmers in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district managed to withdraw cash. However to their utter surprise, the much sought after currency note did not have the smiling face of Mahatma Gandhi on it.

Confused, they thought the notes were counterfeit, but were assured by State Bank of India officials they they were not fake and there might have been some printing glitch.

While the banks took back the notes, Twitteratti did not leave the ocassion to hit out the government’s November 8 decision to ban high value currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.

The demonetisation drive has had its share of glitches, with both men and machines going cashless. It was then the unusual colour and size of the Rs 2,000 note that became the butt of many jokes on the social media.

There were also news of the new note bleeding colour when put under water or rubbed.

Twitterati as usual sprang to action and explained away why the "Gandhi-mukt notes" are a perfectly reasonable and logical result of PM Modi government’s demonetisation move.

No Twitter outrage is complete without bad puns.

Still a better love story than Twilight.

2017 is definitely turning out to be the year of retirements.
