Aimed at instilling a sense of patriotism among students, the Narendra Modi government on February 18 made it mandatory for central universities across the country to fly the national flag. The decision comes within ten days of anti-India slogans being shouted by some students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to mark the death anniversary of terror convict Afzal Guru on February 9. The proposal is said to have been put forward by 46 central university vice-chancellors who met Union human resources development minister Smriti Irani.
As per the specifications fixed by the government, the tricolour should be installed on a 207-foot mast and should weigh 135 kg. Read more.
This is how Twitter reacted to the government's order:

Sad to see the HRD ministry not going in for a 300-foot flag. Demeans India, imo, and is a highly anti-national act of underestimation.
