The Razzies continue their legacy of cruelty by nominating a 12-year-old for Worst Actress

The Golden Raspberry Awards, or more popularly known as the ‘Razzies’, are awards that recognize the worst films of the year in various categories. Have a look at this year’s nominees.

  • The Razzie awards were first given out in 1981 as a parody of the Academy Awards, which honour the best films of the year.
  • The awards are presented annually on the night before the Academy Awards ceremony.

They have since become a popular and well-known awards show, with many celebrities, both winners and losers, attending the ceremony. It's not a serious awards ceremony, but it's a way for people to have a good laugh at the worst movies of the year, and it has become a part of the entertainment culture.

The winners of the Razzies are chosen by a group of around 800 voting members, who are mostly film fans and critics. The voting process is similar to that of the Academy Awards, with nominees being selected by the organisation's board of governors and the winners being chosen by a majority vote.

The categories for the Razzies include Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor, Worst Actress, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Screen Combo.

There are also special categories that are given out occasionally, such as Worst Remake or Rip-off and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off, or Sequel.

Many argue that the Razzies are insensitive and controversial for several reasons. Case in point being 12-year-old child actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong receiving a nomination for Firestarter.

The Razzies have a tendency to be cruel and mean-spirited more often than not. The awards are designed to mock and belittle the nominees, rather than to constructively critique their work. This can be hurtful and damaging to the individuals and groups that are nominated, as well as to the industry as a whole.

It's not the first time a young actor has been nominated for a Razzie.

  • Jake Lloyd, who played young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, not only received the nomination but also ultimately gave up acting due to bullying he unfortunately experienced as a result of the film's poor reception, which the Razzie nomination undoubtedly played a part in.

Last year, the Razzies devised a unique category for actor Bruce Willis, nominating him eight times under the new category, Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 Movie, for every one of his movies last year. However, the award was later revoked due to his subsequently revealed aphasia diagnosis.

The Razzies probably do more harm than let on in perpetuation of negative stereotypes. While they may be intended as a playful way to mock Hollywood, the Razzies have certainly had a negative impact on the industry and the individuals involved.
