India vs Bangladesh Second ODI: A do-or-die match for India

Mohammad BilalDecember 7, 2022 | 06:00 IST

It was after nearly seven years that Bangladesh had rendered a defeat to the Indian team in One Day Internationals (ODIs), at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Bangladesh on December 4. The Indian batting line-up barring KL Rahul completely collapsed in front of Bangladesh's two bowlers, Shakib Al Hasan and Ebadot Hussain.

  • Shakib got his five-wicket haul against India, which was also the first for a Bangladeshi spinner. Ebadot Hossain took four wickets. Apart from KL Rahul who scored 73 off 70 balls, the entire Indian batting line-up fell disastrously. The team posted its second lowest total of 186 against Bangladesh.

Now, in the second ODI on December 7, the Indian team will face Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium. It's a do-or-die situation for the Indian team because if it loses the second match, it will also lose the three-match series.

The team in the second ODI: The Indian batting line-up has changed considerably now. Shikhar Dhawan is opening with Rohit Sharma, while KL Rahul has edged his place at the fifth spot. It is also likely that he will keep the wickets in the second match.

  • In the absence of Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer will bat the fourth spot. Though he ended up scoring 24 off just 39 balls in the first ODI, the right-handed batter has a decent average of 48.40 in ODI cricket.
  • There are questions on whether Shardul Thakur will play or not, as the right-arm medium pacer suffered cramps in the first ODI. If Thakur is dropped, then Umran Malik, who is part of the ODI squad, can play in the match.
  • Axar Patel might not be available for the second ODI as well, as he has a rib injury.
  • Kuldeep Sen and Washington Sundar are expected to keep their place in the team after a decent showing in the first ODI.
  • Shahbaz Ahmed too is expected to stay on in the team.

India's probable Playing XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Umran Malik, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Sen

Who has the edge? On paper, the Indian team looks dominant over Bangladesh.

  • The Indian batting line-up is powerful with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul and Washington Sundar.
  • Mohammad Siraj, Kuldeep Sen, Deepak Chahar and Umran Malik make a decent pace attack.
  • From the Bangladesh team, the bowling is stronger than their batting, which was also reflected in the first ODI. While their bowlers, especially Shakib al Hasan and Ebadot Hossain performed well, the batters struggled to reach the target and won the match by just 1 wicket.
  • In the batting department, Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto have good averages and they can together put up a good score if the team bats first.
  • However, if the Indian team bats first and puts up a total of over 290, it will be difficult for the Bangladeshi batters to chase down this score, knowing that their batting is weak.
  • So, Rohit Sharma's men have an edge against Bangladesh even though they lost the first match.

The match will start at 11.30 am on December 7, and it will be broadcast on Sony Sports Network Channel. SonyLiv app will stream the match online.
