How often does it happen that you listen to a song on Instagram and it gets stuck in your head, in an infinite loop? Instagram Reels are notorious that way, and every week, it's something new. This week, if you have found yourself humming, Je Aithon Kadi Ravi Langh Jave and are stretching your vocal chords, you are not alone.

The female version of Sajjad Ali's Punjabi song Ravi is all over Instagram Reels at the moment. The song has more than 52.3K Reels, but the song is actually a tribute to the historic and culturally rich River Ravi that flows through the heart of Punjab, Pakistan.

Who is Sajjad Ali?

Sajjad Ali, hailing from Karachi, Pakistan, was born in 1966, and is a versatile artist who has dabbled in semi-classical, pop, and rock music genres. Additionally, he is also a poet, actor, film director, and film producer.

What about Ravi?

  • The river Ravi, which originates in the Himalayas in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India, travels towards the west-northwest, passing by Chamba and turning southwest at the boundary of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • After reaching the border of Pakistan, it follows the border for over 50 miles (80 km) before entering the province of Punjab in Pakistan.

What does the song mean?

Sajjad Ali composed and sang this song, and it was released in 2019 (Instagram often brings songs back on Reels).

The original Ravi by Sajjad Ali now has more than 1 crore views on YouTube.

The song is a tribute to the river Ravi, the civilisation that it cradles, and its significance in the lives of the people from Punjab.

Here are the lyrics:

Je Aithon Kadi Ravi Langh Jave, Hayati Punjabi Ban Jave,

This translates to: If the magnificent river Ravi flows through here, I will feel the presence of Punjab.

Main Bediyan Hazar Tod Lan, Main Pani Cho Sah Nichod Lan,

This translates to: I would break free from all constraints, and extract life from Ravi's streams.

Je Aithon Kadi Ravi Langh Jave, Hayati Punjabi Ban Jave,

This translates to: I would sense the presence of Punjab here if the magnificent river Ravi flowed from here.

The lyrics then go to the people who have built homes away from their homes and families.

According to the description on YouTube:

It is a heartfelt and emotional song for all those who have built homes... away from home. People who miss their friends and families, their childhood, the beauty of their language, the culture, and everything in between that makes them who they are; this is dedicated to all PARDESIS.

Sajjad shot the video in a foreign land, and it shows him wandering around, singing about his homeland and the Ravi.

Here are the complete lyrics, along with the translation:

Je Aithon Kadi Ravi Langh Jave, Hayati Punjabi Ban Jave,

(If the magnificent river Ravi flows through here, I will feel the presence of Punjab).

Main Bediyan Hazar Tod Lan, Main Pani Cho Sah Nichod Lan,

(I would break free from all constraints, and extract life from Ravi's streams).

Je Aithon Kadi Ravi Langh Jave, Hayati Punjabi Ban Jave,

(I would sense the presence of Punjab here if the magnificent river Ravi flowed from here).

Main Bediyan Hazar Tod Lan, Main Pani Cho Sah Nichod Lan,

(I would release myself from all of the restraints. I would try to draw life out of Ravi's waters).

Je Aithon Kadi Ravi Langh Jave Ho

(If the magnificent river Ravi flowed from here…)

Je Ravi Vich Pani Koi Nai, Te Apni Kahani Koi Nai,

(I have no legacy to speak about if there is no water in the Ravi river).

Je Sang Beliya Koi Na Te Kise Nu Sunani Koi Nai,

(Who would one talk to if he was alone?)

Akhan Ch Dariya Gholke, Main Zakhma Di Tha Te Rod Lan

(Streams of tears would fall from my eyes, which I would then pour to my wounds).

Je Aithon Kadi Ravi Langh Jave Ho

(If the beautiful Ravi River flowed from here…)

Eh Kaisi Majboori Ho Gayi, Ke Sajna Ton Doori Ho Gayi,

(What sort of powerlessness is it to be away from my beloved?)

Te Veleyan De Nal Vagh Di, Eh Jind Kadon Poori Ho Gayi,

(I didn't know how quickly my life had gone).

Beganeya Di Rah Shod Ke, Main Apni Muhar Mod Lan,

(I'd quit following outsiders and instead forge my own way.)

Je Aithon Kadi Ravi Langh Jave Ho

(If the magnificent river Ravi flowed from here…)
