If you are a writer or someone in the creative field, and you find it difficult to meet your deadlines or are a pro at procrastinating? Then, Tokyo's Manuscript Writing Cafe, popularly known as Anti-Procrastination Cafe in the Japan capital's Koenji neighbourhood is where you should head.

You can accomplish your writing goals here because the staff will quite literally make sure you are not slacking... or, you know, procrastinating!

FYI: You cannot leave the cafe unless you have achieved the goal you set for yourself!

We often visit cafes in the hope of getting work done, meeting deadlines and hopefully overcome the procrastination problem that gets in the way of being productive.

Now imagine a cafe that would just not let you procrastinate. Imagine if someone were to constantly sit on your head and ensure that you finished the task you were there for.

That's what this cafe in Tokyo does.

This unique Manuscript Writing Cafe in Tokyo, Japan, is the place to be if you are a writer, editor, proofreader, video producer or mangaka (Japanese graphic artist) under a time crunch. The cafe won't let you leave till you have finished your goal.

What does a visit to the cafe mean?

  • Cost: The cafe charges 150 Japanese yen ($1.15 or Rs 92) for the first 30 minutes, and then 300 ($2.30 or Rs 184) an hour after that.
  • The process: Once customers enter the cafe, they have to arm the cafe with some information - their name, writing goals, and the time they plan to finish by. They can also ask Takuya Kawai (the cafe’s owner) to nag them or check in frequently on their progress.
  • You cannot leave the cafe unless you have finished the task you set for yourself. Customers complete their goals even if they have to stay past the closing time of the cafe.
  • The cafe has limited seating - only 10 seats.
  • Drinks and snacks: It provides unlimited self-service refills of tea and coffee. Snacks are also provided.

  • What else: High-speed Wi-Fi, docking ports, tall chairs (that will help you sit in an upright position to work)

There are progress-check levels

You can choose the kind of progress status check-ins you want, ranging from

  • mild: where customers are asked if they have finished their work;
  • normal: where you are asked about your progress every hour; and
  • hard: where one of the staff members stands behind you for a push. Someone’s breathing down your neck, quite literally!

Would you ever consider going to this cafe?
