Remember the man who opened an emergency exit door mid-flight during landing in South Korea? Yes, so he reportedly told the police that he had lost his job, was feeling suffocated, and thought the flight was taking too long to land, that's why he opened the door.

  • The incident took place on Friday, May 26, when an Asiana Airlines flight from Jeju Island was landing at Daegu, in the southern part of South Korea.
He felt the flight was taking longer than it should have been and felt suffocated inside the cabin.

Asiana Airlines announces measures

  • Now, the South Korean carrier has announced in a statement that they will no longer be selling seats next to two emergency exit doors on the flight, even if the flight is full.
This measure is a safety precaution and applies even if the flight is full.

Which seats are not on sale on Asiana Airlines?

  • Seat number 26A on 174-seat A321s
  • Seat number 31A on 195-seat models

The above seats are located at the centre of the plane and near the place where flight attendants sit during takeoff and landing. However, it is unknown how putting two seats next to emergency doors on no-sale is supposed to prevent similar incidents at other emergency exit doors.

Recap:

  • The man in his 30s was arrested upon landing at Daegu airport after he opened up the emergency exit door on a flight nearly 250 m from the ground during landing.
  • Video of the incident showed horrific moments inside the cabin as wind gushed through and passengers sitting near the door clutched on to their armrests.

  • There were a total of 200 people onboard. 12 people suffered minor injuries while nine of them were taken to hospital.

While it is impossible to swing open the emergency exit door when the flight is mid-air due to air pressure difference, reports say in this case it was only made possible as the flight was landing. It is possible that the air pressure on the ground and inside the cabin wasn't much, allowing the door to be swung open.
