If you break the speed limit, Austria will find you and sell your car off

The Austrian government is fed up with illegal car races in the country. And it has decided to nip the problem in the bud - the car! No car, no speeding. Simple. The Austrian government announced Monday, that people who are caught overspeeding will have their cars seized and ultimately auctioned off.

  • The law aims to deter "boy racers" by taking away their prized possession. Even for the rich ones, with perhaps very exclusive cars, this feels like a slap.
At the speeds we are talking about here no one is fully in control of their vehicle. The car becomes an uncontrollable weapon and a danger to completely innocent people.
- Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler

The plan:

Car will be seized for two weeks if:

  • Caught going 60 kmph above speed limits in towns (which is usually 50 kmph)
  • Caught going 70 kmph above speed limits in places with 130 kmph limit

Forever goodbye to the car if:

  • If anyone is a repeat offender
  • If you are a first offender but going over 80 kmph above the speed limit in a town, or over 90 kmph above the limit elsewhere
He who has no car anymore cannot speed anymore. That is precisely why this measure is so successful in other countries - because it hits where it hurts and protects the general population.

Here are a few more weird traffic laws from around the world (some of them are a blessing though, tbh):

INDIA

  • India's driving ethics is infamous around the world. And even the laws seem to reflect the bad driving sense. There is a Rs 10,000 fine if you are driving a vehicle without a pollution control certificate. But there is only a Rs 500 fine if your vehicle exhumes smoke beyond the limit.

  • It is also illegal for a private car driver to offer a lift to strangers.

REST OF THE WORLD

  • In Russia, you will need to cough up 2,000 roubles (Rs 2,600) if your car is dirty.
  • In Cyprus, eating while driving can attract an €85 fine (Rs 7,300) including sipping water. No more drive-thrus.
  • In Switzerland, it is illegal to wash your car on a Sunday and also illegal to slam the car door. Huh...
  • In Germany, you keep your cars up to German standards. Your car must be "efficient", anything else is illegal. And it is illegal to stop or for your car to break down on the autobahn, including running out of fuel.

  • In Japan, it is illegal to splash mud or water on someone or pedestrians with your car. (The world needs this!)
  • In Canada's Jasper Gates, it is illegal to drive faster than a horse or a carriage. (We will let you process the information a bit).

Now, we need a separate category for all the weird traffic laws in the US:

  • In San Francisco, you cannot wipe your car with used underwear.

  • In all of California, you cannot drive a car wearing a dressing gown or a bathrobe, or a nightgown. This is ONLY if you are a woman. (That makes no sense, you say!
  • In Denver, Colorado, you cannot drive a black car on Sundays.
  • In Maine, you can't park in front of a Dunkin' Donuts!
