Issey Miyake, the man who took Japan to Paris and gave Silicon Valley the black turtleneck

There are only a few designers whose names have become synonymous with fashion innovation and Issey Miyake was one of them. The Japanese artist-designer, who died on August 5, was known for his sharp pleating, iconic geometric Bao Bao bag, and signature fragrances. And of course, that iconic Silicon Valley turtleneck.

Miyake, 84, died of liver cancer on August 5 in Tokyo. His funeral was a quiet, private affair, just like he wanted it. 

Issey Miyake, in his decades-long career in fashion, became a common name around the fashion world; including in India. 

In fact, he was fascinated by India’s textile heritage, especially khadi. He was captivated by its simplicity and purity, its minimalist philosophy that resonated with his own style. Miyake even held an exhibition in 2019 on khadi, titled Khadi: Indian Craftsmanship, at the Tribeca Store in New York.
