  • According to Medanta hospital's Medical director, Dr Sanjiv Gupta, a comprehensive team of specialists are providing treatment to the veteran politician.
  • His son and the SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav was in Lucknow when he was told of his father's worsening health. He rushed to Delhi following the news.
  • Yadav also assured party workers that his father's health was stable.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to Akhilesh Yadav to inquire about Mulayam Singh Yadav's health and reportedly said he will provide whatever assistance is required.
  • Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath also said that he spoke to doctors at Medanta Hospital and asked them to provide the best medical help needed for Mulayam Singh Yadav.

A veteran politician: Mulayam Singh Yadav has had a long career in politics. He was the almost Prime Minister of India, a Union Defence Minister and UP Chief Minister multiple times.

  • When he started out, he was just a wrestler taking part in a local match in Mainpuri. His skills caught the eye of the then MLA of Jaswantnagar in Mainpuri, Nathu Singh, who gave him a start in politics.
  • Yadav became an MLA at the age of 28 in 1967. Several years later in 1992, he started the Samajwadi Party which went on to become one of the biggest regional parties.

  • It was in 1996, when the United Front was to form a government at the Centre, that Mulayam Singh Yadav's name was floated for the Prime Minister's post. But he lost the chance to Lalu Prasad Yadav's opposition.
  • He also served as the Union Defence Minister from 1996-98.
  • His politics in Uttar Pradesh was largely shaped by the Ayodhya dispute, the demolition in 1992, and its before and after impact.
  • Famously, he ordered a police firing on Karsewaks gathered in Ayodhya in 1990. He became known as the champion of minorities as turning OBCs and Muslims into his vote bank.

Samajwadi Party: The party Mulayam Singh Yadav built went through a tough time when the dispute between his brother Shivpal Yadav and son Akhilesh Yadav threatened to split the party. In the end, the rein to the party was passed to Akhilesh Yadav with Mulayam Singh Yadav's support.

Mulayam Singh Yadav's wife Sadhna Gupta passed away in July 2021. His first wife and Akhilesh Yadav's mother, Maalti Devi died in 2003.
