Bollywood at Cannes 2015: Who looked hot and who did not

When Shabana Azmi urged people to focus on the films instead of fashion at this year's edition of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on her Twitter page, she probably forgot that the film festival has been long associated with make-up brand, L'Oreal Paris. It is on their invitation that we get to see beautiful women, each representing the brand in their respective countries, to walk the ramp looking their finest. Well, it's a cosmetic brand so it is also going to be about women's clothes and beauty, right? Sorry Shabanaji, this piece will be about clothes and just clothes at that.

Now that that's out of the way, let's discuss and dissect the fashion at Cannes as adorned by our Bollywood women. While Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor have been regulars, the newbie this time was Katrina Kaif. Nandita Das and Richa Chadha made a cameo this time round. There was also Mallika Sherawat who was there again this year. What was she there for? Umm, no one but Mallika herself would know that.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Her sartorial equation with Cannes was always rocky until last year when she knocked everyone out with her stunning avatar. This year, however, Aishwarya was nothing like everyone expected.

For her first outing at the UN and Variety magazine's Gender Equality session, Aishwarya wore a Sabyasachi dress cinched at the waist. Florals are trendy during summer, yes, but this was more curtain/carpet than floral. If the idea was to look somber, it didn't work out either. The face looked flawless but the clothes were certainly not happening!

For her maiden red carpet appearance at this year's Cannes, she chose an Elie Saab tulle dress for the occasion. Wrong colour, bad fit and hideous see-through patch in the middle, everything went wrong with this one.

Things looked up for Aishwarya in this wonderful Stella McCartney look. Flared trousers and white shirts, though a bit safe, surely brought out a spark in her personality.

Choosing this lovely marsala dress from Oscar De La Renta, Aishwarya made a lovely choice of going easy on the accessories. The colour suits her to the hilt and the fit flatters her shape. Lovely!

Donning a Georges Chakra mermaid gown, Aishwarya looked fabulous as she went for interviews as the brand ambassador for L'Oreal. Her white and gold outfit was spot in terms of colour and the fit complemented her well. However, it was a bit overwhelming considering it wasn't for the red carpet.

Just like Sonam, it was Ralph & Russo that gave Aishwarya her best look at this year's edition of Cannes. In her strapless monochrome gown with dramatic ruffles, she looked beyond stunning owning every bit of her look. Is this the best she's ever looked at Cannes? It's one of the best if not the best for sure.

Katrina Kaif

First timer Katrina must have been under tremendous pressure. Alas, it didn't motivate her to push the boundaries much. Well, she made a good start.

Choosing a Milly dress and Manolo Blahnik sandals for her first-ever appearance, Katrina went monochrome with red hair. Classy, sexy and elegant, she rocked this one.

Her first turn on the red carpet saw Katrina in a strapless Oscar De La Renta gown. Though the outfit was lovely and fit her well, her red hair didn't go with the look at all. It's sad because the dress was worthy of all the applause.

What is with everyone messing Elie Saab creations this year? This all red attire from the designer did absolutely nothing for Katrina. All that red combined with a red belt and her red lips and hair along with the red carpet was an eye sore. Not to forget that uncomfortable fit that showcased everything that wasn't to be seen.

Sonam Kapoor

If nothing else, our resident fashionista has to be credited for pushing the fashion envelope yet again this year and giving fashion a much-needed creative edge.

It's fabulous how Sonam wears atleast one Indian look every year at Cannes. She started this year with this sexy Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla look sari with a revealing choli. It was sexy and sparkling. The colour was great for the day and she had just the right attitude for it.

Wearing Ralph and Russo Couture, Chopard jewellery and Zanotti footwear, Sonam ruled the red carpet. Cobalt Blue was such a striking colour and the dramatic gown added to the allure. Sonam, I bow down to thee!

She opted for an Ashi Studio white A-line dress for the launch of Vikas Khanna's latest book. It was pristine and dramatic yes but for a book launch, a little too much. She should have opted for something lighter and simpler.

The dress that got everyone talking and inspired countless number of internet memes. Sonam's dramatic turn in this feathered Elie Saab creation with Chopard jewellery made everyone sit up and take notice. She experimented, dared and had fun too. The idea at any big red carpet is to go all out and get attention and keeping that in mind, Sonam had the last laugh.

It was another Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla for Sonam at the Chopard party as she strutted in the dramatic sculptured top with a black layered skirt. Separately, the two would have looked odd, but together the combination made for a fabulous look. Sonam looked hot!

Mallika Sherawat

Yes, she was there, yet again. But this time Mallika decided to cover it up and did a pretty decent job at that.

She wore Alexis Mabille for the occasion with a lovely diamond neck piece from Boucheron. From Mallika's standards, this was quite elegant and understated.

Nandita Das

The super-talented actor-director made a surprise visit and chose to stick to her roots and her basic style.

This all-gold look was lovely. The potli bag complemented the look.

This sari, though was way too basic and simple to get any brownie points. Nandita, for sure, could've worn a more happening outfit for the evening. Dissapointing!

Richa Chadha

Her film may have got a standing ovation at the festival but her style sense could seriously do with a makeover.

The fact that Deepika Padukone wore a better version of this Sabyasachi sari in India recently left no chances for Richa to shine. I anyway don't care for the big floral print and the blouse didn't go with the sari either.

In a Giles Deacon dress, Richa somewhat made up for the sari disaster. However the fit of this one could've been better - it makes her look bigger than she actually is.
