Weapons master of Game of Thrones reveals his secrets

1. Tommy Dunne indicates that, when creating the Dothraki weapons, which mostly employ a curved, scimitar-like blade, he was influenced by both the “look” of Ancient Egyptian weapons, and by more practical concerns.

2. He emphasises the fact that every single weapon seen on screen during Game of Thrones, whether it’s in the hands of a principal character or an extra, will have been made especially for that purpose.

3. A large number of the weapons on the show are imbued with heavy symbolic value. All the swords have names. They’re not mere props, but an integral part of the story.

4. The most arresting thing about borh the Oathkeeper and Widow’s Wail is their colour, and their beauty. Each one took Dunne between two and three weeks to make.

5. Officially, all the show’s weapons belong to HBO, but, design-wise, Dunne has a free hand in their creation.
