Sultan teaser is every bit a tease as Salman in briefs

Sultan's first look could not have left us at more of an edge: Salman Khan's glistening "curves" are zoomed in upon, as he proceeds to enter the akhada, or the wrestling pit, to the rolling beats of the dhol and the cries of "Sultan, Sultan".

He waves around clubs and lifts heavy weights, against a sound track that pumps you up and makes you want to join the crowd and cheer for Sultan. Stepping inside the akhada, Sultan runs his hand through the sand and gives us a smoulder; the crowd roars.

Adorned in only black underwear, which is a surprisingly good fit, he attacks his opponent with a strong push and flings him to the ground as the commentator goes berserk. Sultan gets up with immediate ease and runs his hand through his short moustache, and we decide to give this film a definite go.

Set for release this Eid (and perhaps clashing with Shah Rukh Khan's Raees), Ali Abbas Zafar (director of Gunday and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) is now ready to direct Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma and Randeep Hooda in this directorial venture.

Khan stars as Romi Sultan Ali Khan, a wrestler in a Haryana akhada, perhaps Bollywood's answer to Mickey Rourke, or maybe even a Million Dollar Baby. At least the storyline suggests it deals with Sultan's personal and professional problems.

Anushka Sharma stars as the female protagonist Gauri Phelwaan, although she's missing from the teaser. Randeep Hooda supposedly plays Sultan's coach, but once again can't be seen in the teaser.

Bollywood is obviously going gaga over it. The first one to cheer for Salman Khan as the teaser hit social media was King Khan himself.

He tweeted, "Kya baathai…Haryana ka sher aa gaya… Sultan Bhaijaan".

Perhaps this is Salman's answer to Shah Rukh's Chak de India? We are certainly not complaining, for sporting dramas do generally get good reviews and attention in Bollywood, right from Bhaag Milkha Bhaag to Mary Kom. This, despite the general cricket fever that keeps the country in its thrall and the slew of intelligent Bollywood dramas doing the rounds.

So, it seems the story of a wrestler would definitely make for a very interesting watch.

Wrestling is a very ancient Indian sport, and it's great that it will now get the mainstream attention that Salman Khan can bestow upon anything.

Hollywood, however, has betaen India to this long back. It has furnished some truly epic wrestling movies: the greatest of them all would definitely be The Wrestler, the story of an ageing sportsman literally wrestling to hold on to a bygone fame.

The other gem would be Requiem for a Heavyweight, telling the story of a boxing champion's fall into the dangerous and corrupt world ruining the industry and the sport.

India's well-known wrestling and cinematic connection is of course Dara Singh.

Winner of the World Wrestling Championship, Dara Singh turned to acting after retirement acting in various television and movie ventures, last seen of course, as Kareena Kapoor's all-knowing grandfather in Jab We Met.
