New Star Wars teaser: Seven things you did not notice

Last evening, Disney released the second teaser for Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, and fans have literally gone mental on the internet. More importantly, the teaser gives us a sneak insight into what you can expect of the movie, which is slated to be released this December.

1) The Rebels won or have started to win

After the death of Darth Sidious (aka Emperor Palpatine) in the Return of the Jedi, it is pretty clear that the Rebels made a big dent in the hierarchy of the empire. As Palpatine was killed by Darth Vader when he turned back to the light side of the force to save his son Luke Skywalker, the two Sith lords — the master and the apprentice — were decimated in one swift blow. Still it is possible a major war ensued handing the balance of the power of the galaxy in favour of the rebels. In the teaser you can clearly see the desert planet of Tatooine, which has a crashed Star Destroyer, and this is clear evidence that the rebels, led probably by Luke Skywalker, have started to win. Additionally, throughout the teaser, we see that the galaxy is still at war.

2) The Stormtroopers are more than just clones

As we witnessed in the first teaser of the movie, there’s a black dude who’s a Stormtrooper. He makes a comeback in the second teaser, which basically means that the empire started to branch beyond the Mandalorian clones for their ground army.

3) Luke Skywalker is probably a Jedi Master

After the death of Anakin Skywalker (aka Darth Vader), Darth Sidious and Jedi grandmaster Yoda in the Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker essentially became the most powerful wielder of the force in the galaxy. Clearly, it seems that the movie takes place years after Return of the Jedi, which means that Luke has transcended to the level of a Jedi master, and is probably the head of the Jedi order. Importantly, he says, “The Force is strong in my family, my father has it, I have it, my sister has it. You have that power too.” This indicates that he is training force adepts to become Jedi knights.

4) Anakin Skywalker could make a return

Like we’ve mentioned before, Luke says, “The Force is strong in my family, my father has it, I have it, my sister has it. You have that power too.” It is interesting that he refers to his father in the present tense. In the Return of the Jedi, we saw the death of Darth Vader, who was Anakin Skywalker before he turned to the dark side. At the end of the Revenge of the Sith, Yoda and Obi-Wan discovered force ghosts, and that’s how Obi-Wan and Yoda could keep in contact with Luke Skywalker in the Return of the Jedi. We also saw in the film, even Anakin Skywalker joined the two Jedi masters as a force ghost. It is highly likely that Anakin Skywalker could make a return as a force ghost. In fact, this could apply to Yoda and Obi-Wan too.

5) A new dark enemy?

The first teaser showed us a glimpse of a new Sith lord who wields a lightsaber with a cross-guard. He makes a return looking very menacing and fully armoured like a knight. In addition to him we also get a glimpse of a bounty hunter who is also armoured to the hilt with some heavy duty weaponry.

6) Han Solo is old

It goes without saying that Han Solo is old, Harrison Ford last played the character 32 years ago in the Return of the Jedi. Perhaps the movie takes place 30 years after the original trilogy. But if JJ Abrams wanted to mask Han Solo’s age, that would’ve been possible as modern CGI graphics allow for some major manipulation. However, that’s not the case.

7) Tatoonie is back

From the first sequence where you can see the crashed to Star Destroyer on a desert planet to the last sequence of the teaser, there are major hints that Tatooine is a major setting for the movie. In fact, in the last line Han Solo tells Chewbacca, “Chewie, we are home.”
