The best and worst of Oscar 2015 fashion

As much as the discussion is about movies and performances that do or don't win the highly coveted trophy every year, there's always a lot of talk about the red carpet bedazzles and faux pas.

The most exciting celebrities turn up wearing the most exciting of designer outfits and it's almost like the entire fashion industry is in the biggest tizzy of the year. Each garment is scanned with scathing eyes and every look is commented on with much detailing.

This year too has been no different; it's only been better dressed in fact. The list of better dressed women has been longer for most critics and fewer disasters have been presented. The turnout was rather impressive and figuring out the not-so-good ones was quite a task. However, it's only fair to applaud the ones who shone the brightest and point out, not so gently, the ones who failed to make a mark - unless of course if they were aiming to shock more than serenade.

Here's presenting, in my humble opinion, the best and the worst of Oscar fashion this year.

Best dressed: Women who wowed and wooed with much élan

Scarlett Johansson - Versace

This lady can do no wrong - that face, that post-baby body and that attitude. Scarlett Johansson rocked her form-fitting Versace that perfectly highlighted her fabulous figure. Not to forget, that statement emerald neckpiece and the Paiget Mediterranean Garden ear cuff. Men were certainly bowled over.

Emma Stone - Elie Saab

She's a perpetual risk-taker and thankfully almost always gets it right. This year was no different as Emma Stone stunned us in this ethereal Elie Saab creation. The colour was unconventional and her choice of lip-shade was risqué too but trust her to own the look and come out a winner.

Jennifer Lopez - Elie Saab

At 45, JLo is still the queen when it comes to rocking daring outfits. Her tulle Elie Saab gown with the dangerously plunging neckline was no exception. Full points for the nude shade and the flowy A-line silhouette; she had the right confidence that you need whenever you plan to dare to bare.

Rita Ora - Marchesa

Not many women chose long trails for the red carpet this year - Rita deserves to be applauded just for that. Her Marchesa deep blue gown clung to her curves at all the right places and the gold detailing was spectacular. This was a wonderful dreamy look from an otherwise daring dresser.

Rosamund Pike - Custom Givenchy

The woman may have lost the Oscar but surely won everyone's heart in her custom Givenchy embroidered dress. Extra points for going bare shouldered without relying on jewellery and letting her outfit do all the talking. We love you Gone Girl.

Worst dressed: The ones who tried but failed, some miserably and some not-so miserably

Lady Gaga - Azzedine Alaia

She's always believed in outrageous clothing but if this was her attempt at being "subtle", its best that Lady Gaga sticks to her old ways. Her performance might have been applauded but her ill-fitting outfit with those Cruella De Vil gloves was definitely sombre-scary. And no, that is not a compliment.

Felicity Jones - Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen

She's a great actress, yes, but her outfit was so blah it put many people to sleep. This Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress did nothing for Felicity's body or the red carpet. It was ill-fitted, yawn worthy in creation and the colour was so last season.

Julianne Moore - Chanel

The Best Actress winner is quite the stunner both in looks and her performances. But Julianne Moore could certainly up her style quotient on the red carpet. Her Chanel dress was rather androgynous in its fit and not the right shade for her gorgeous skin. She looked totally wiped out!

Nicole Kidman - Louis Vuitton

The wrong shade of shimmer and wrong shade of accessories are actually the smaller issues with Nicole's Louis Vuitton dress. The real problem is that red belt-like waistline that stands out like a sore thumb. Unimaginative, dull and rather '90s is how it looks.

Naomi Watts - Armani Prive

Naomi's beaded Armani Prive number isn't that bad to be honest. It's just that the shiny black bustier peeking from behind that spoils the fun. The outfit is striking but isn't anything particularly spectacular either. She's done much better in the past and we'd like to forget this one as a one-off case.
