Our Modi’s 'tryst with destiny' speech

About ten months ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time has come for us to redeem our pledge... not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially because we still have four years and two months before we are called to pledge again.

A moment comes, which comes with great rarity, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that India took the pledge to be different.

We have successfully ended a period of lull and we have overcome the lethargy of under achievement to experience a fresh brand of national identity. The achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater triumphs and travels that await us. With wanderlust greater than any who have come before us, we pledge to greet those millions, in the furthest corners of the earth, who still have not had a chance to see us in person.

Why we need to do this is very clear in our minds... we have to labour and to work, and work hard, to give reality to our dreams. We are the rightful ingredients of a great concoction on the verge of bold advance, and we have to live up to that high standard. All of us, to whatever caste, creed or religion we may belong, are equally the promoters of Hindutva, the glory of India. In this we share equal responsibilities, privileges and obligations because we owe to our ancestors who were all vegetarian and Hindu. To that righteous thought we owe the accountability of making our words and touring bags travel far and wide, to places scenic and important, that the ISIS still do not threaten and where there is peace. In all those places we pledge to talk of glory and money and how to apportion a larger share of both.

We cannot encourage boredom or narrow-sightedness, for no country can be great whose people are narrow in thought or in action and do not think out of the suitcase. We are ever ready to spread our thoughts and wings. No country, no culture that has not been prey to Ebola or civil war, shall remain untouched. Every possible chance and half chance shall we convert into a foreign trip. Brazil, Japan, USA, Australia, Singapore, Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Mauritius and Fiji are conquered now we head to France, Germany and Canada with China and Russia next in line. We have booked our tickets and we shall not only show but also see the world.

It is a fateful moment for us in India, when a new star rises – it is the true test of freedom. Out in the world the past still clings to us in some measure and we have to strive to change perceptions. We take hope that history begins anew with us, the history books shall be suitably changed so that we shall live and act in glory and others will copy if they get a chance. It is our pledge that this star shall never set. I that is we, stand at this moment not as a mere prime minister but as the beacon of hope. Anyone can aspire to see the world; it is our tryst with destiny that makes the world a mere step away from the railway station of Vadnagar. A few hard stops and break journeys along the route provide experience of when to keep mum! Let that expectation never be betrayed! We rejoice in being a free country where every tea seller wears a suit with his name on it, where any one can hope to see the world – at government expense.
