Who's in deeper waters — Hrithik Roshan or Super 30?

A deadly combination, indeed.

Even if we strain our mind the hardest, it won’t be easy to remember the last Hrithik movie which saw success. For the most part of this year, aside from the controversy over Kangana Ranaut, Hrithik has mostly been in the news for his upcoming movie Super 30, based on the story of Bihar’s secret to IIT JEE.

But now, we are not sure who is in deeper waters here. Is it Hrithik Roshan and his seemingly submerged career? Or, Super 30, the movie? From one disaster to another — that’s been the journey of the production of the movie so far, quite like the career of Hrithik.

Hrithik is essaying the character of mathematics wizard Anand Kumar, who founded Super-30 in Patna in 2002. Its operation has been researched. It’s no run-of-the-mill IIT training institute. It picks up only 30 students, who can’t afford coaching in other institutes. And the operation, reportedly, has a gurukul model. While it started grabbing attention, in 2008 came the turning point. All its 30 students reportedly cracked IIT-JEE.

Since then, Super-30 became a filmy success story, an example to emulate — a sacrosanct institution in an otherwise banal market.

But early this year, after the results of IIT-JEE were out, something went wrong.

Many students came up with “failure” stories. Some of them complained that Anand Kumar has apparently been inflating his claims and Super-30 is nothing but a façade under which a regular IIT training institute — Ramanuj Institute — is operating. Many students who landed in Patna with the hope of getting into Super-30 were asked to take admission in Ramanuj Institute reportedly.

This came to the fore after now-tainted filmmaker Vikas Bahl chose this to be the subject of his Hrithik-starrer film.

After putting in a lot of effort to flesh out a saleable story, with Hrithik Roshan, who doesn’t look like the mathematician at all, the movie came to a screeching halt as almost every day a PIL gets filed against Anand Kumar.

So, as it seems, the issue of Anand Kumar is sub-judice, and the last thing it requires is a glorifying biopic from Bollywood. Thus, it was reportedly decided that Hrithik’s Super 30 won’t be presented as a biopic showcasing Anand Kumar. It would be made to look like just another movie, about a struggling mathematician.

Then came the bigger jolt.

Everybody in the industry apparently knew that director Vikas Bahl was a reported abuser. But suddenly, this piece of information came to the fore when the movie was nearing its deadline. So, it now doesn’t behove Hrithik, or, for that matter, the producers to continue associations with an alleged abuser.

So, what next?

A film on a hero who is apparently not so heroic.

A film by a director, who has apparently lost his direction.

A film with a hero who needs to prove his heroism in the box office.

A deadly combination, indeed.

What makes it deadlier is the last-minute addition by Kangana Ranaut, who is now urging the industry not to work with Hrithik Roshan as well — because he is also an alleged abuser, like Vikas Bahl.

Meanwhile, in the absence of Vikas, Hrithik has reportedly taken charge of the post-production work of the movie.

We really don’t know how Super 30 actually became unlucky 13.
