Mary Kom: From one champion to another

Over the years Mary Kom has proved to be one of the best women boxers of all time, but her greatness is not limited to the ring. Time and again, she has shown great mental strength to fight various difficulties and won several honours for the country.

She has been a role model for aspiring women boxers all around the world but for people in India and especially Manipur and the Northeast, her influence has been way beyond boxing. Despite having limited resources, Mary produced the best and made everyone in our country proud.

It is not just about the five world championship titles and Olympics bronze medal, because the way she made a comeback after becoming a mother is unbelievable. The effort she put in can't be described in words and should act as an inspiration for every Indian in any field.

I am delighted that finally a Bollywood movie has been made on the legend of Mary Kom with actress Priyanka Chopra doing a fabulous job. This movie will create even more awareness about Mary and give more hope to the people of Manipur and Northeast that despite the dearth of facilities, greatness can be achieved.

It is also commendable the way Mary gives so much back to the sport and society in general by having her own boxing academy and female-only fight club at Imphal to teach girls to defend themselves against sexual violence.

She is truly an ambassador for not only Manipur and the Northeast but the entire nation. I am sure her life story will encourage more women in our country to take up sports. There will always be only one Mary Kom but hopefully her incredible feats will create more woman icons in India in every aspect of life.

As for Mary, I wish her all the best for the forthcoming Asian Games and all her future endeavours.
