10 rules to get casual hook-ups right

A casual hook-up isn't a feather in your cap

1. Keep it hush hush

A casual hook-up isn't a feather in your cap and it's best not to treat it like an achievement. Avoid tooting your own horn by telling everyone about it - and certainly not an exaggerated version.

2. Don't make it awkward

It's not taboo and is a widely accepted practice. Post fact awkwardness, avoiding eye contact and other evasive behaviour is not the way to go.

3. Set your rules

Put your cards on the table. Make sure both people know there are no feelings or long term plans and don't mislead or be misled. Make the situation very clear to the other person and don't be afraid to be upfront about what you want out of the hook-up.

4. Play it safe

A casual hook-up is usually with someone you do not or barely know - so it's best to keep the hook up safe. Make sure you use protection.

5. Make sure it's consensual

If you're picking someone up at a bar, there is likely some alcohol involved. Be careful and don't take advantage of anyone's inebriation, else the morning after will require a lot more than emergency birth control.

6. Be open about what you like

Don't be shy about communicating what you like since this is someone who does not know you. Let them decide if they are into it and don't force your preferences on anyone.

7. Be open minded about what the other person likes

Your partner will also need to follow the aforementioned rule and it's best to be non-judgemental about their likes and dislikes.

8. Keep it simple

Avoid situations where feelings are involved because otherwise it takes the "casual" away from the hook-up. Popular consensus is to avoid casual hook ups with friends, but that depends on personal equations.

9. Pick a safe space

Just because it's casual does not mean it needs to be badly planned. Make sure you pick a spot that both (or all) of you are comfortable with.

10. Enjoy it

Try not to think too much about it - keep it casual and enjoy it.
