How I keep fit all round the year, festive season or not

Now that the festive season is coming to a lull and the wedding season is edging closer, we need all the tips we can to stay healthy and in shape. Add to that the fast-paced lifestyle that we lead these days, there is very little scope of physical activity. The body and health bear the brunt of our excesses. So how to stay fit and healthy given the hustle and bustle of everyday routine? Here are just the right tips for you:

Stay hydrated

Balancing work and life can be exhausting and we often tend to be lax about our water intake. While being busy with work and household chores, do not forget to take care of yourself and make sure you drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Dehydration can leave you tired, dizzy, and sleepy, and put a down low on the celebrations. And trust me, you need that inflow of energy to keep up. So remember to keep your bottle handy and make sure to hydrate whenever you can!

Snack on almonds

Almonds are one of my favourite snacks to munch on. They are loaded with nutrients including dietary fibre, vitamin E and vitamin B12. What is even better is that — almonds are known to have satiating properties that promote feelings of fullness. So once you snack on a handful of almonds, they will keep you full for a while, preventing you from binging on unhealthy options.

Opt for healthier recipes

It is so very easy to lose focus on what we eat when all we're doing is attending parties. To still enjoy succulent refreshments while staying healthy, I try to incorporate healthier recipes or ingredients in the dishes that I tend to binge on. A simple trick is to include healthier options like sesame-smoked almonds, or a sprouts-infused salad when going for the evening snack. You can also try replacing sugar with jaggery or opting for low-fat milk for your desserts to make them healthier.

Make sure you sleep

We all know the importance of staying well-rested after working the entire day. Juggling between work and household, we tend to keep awake till late. However, it is important to realise that our body needs to rest to function the way we expect it to. To increase productivity and concentration, it is vital to get a good night’s sleep.

Don’t skip your breakfast

Breakfast is unquestionably the most important meal of the day. I make sure that no matter how busy my schedule is, I do not skip it. Commit to having breakfast every day. If you find it too boring, work with different ingredients to make it more interesting. Try seasonal smoothies or try adding healthy and flavourful nuts like almonds to your cereal. Whatever you do, make sure you don’t go about your day without the dose of energy that is much needed.

Stay active

Stationing yourself for long hours while binging on those (easily and quickly available) delicacies is a typical scenario for many. But it is very important for you to burn those extra calories and stay active to avoid getting into the state of inertia. Even if it is for an hour, get exercise and stay active. Walk, jog, swim, or do any activity you like — but don’t miss out on taking care of your fitness.
