Maradona: Hand of God, woman beater
Granted Diego Maradona is not an obscure name but if one does a Google search, the hummingbird solution throws up his short bio on the right while showing links of his Wikipedia page and other assorted links on the left. The short bio lists his DOB, place of birth, height, full name (Armando is his middle name) and weight before moving on to his now divorced spouse. The weight, apart from the feats that the 5.44-feet frame has achieved, is pegged at 100kg. With that weight and given the elevation from the ground, let's suffice it to say he's fat.
The English haven't forgotten their tormentor-in-chief from the 1986 football World Cup quarterfinals. Argentina won 2-1 and went on to win the tournament. The first goal was in fact punched in by Maradona, remember in football that should have been called a foul but the referee, a Tunisian, didn't see it. It gained notoriety as the Hand of God goal after Maradona's reply at the press conference that the goal was scored a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the Hand of God. The second goal that day is a goal that will be recalled when one scours one's pre-teen years for moments of infinite magic, that was the Goal of the Century when Maradona dribbled past four English defenders and the English goalkeeper to slam it in the net.
Exercising one's memory when one turns a geriatric can wait given the recent Maradona story. The 100kg man has been caught slapping his girlfriend, now estranged, Rocio Oliva. She shot the video on her mobile phone some hours after Maradona told the media that he never raised a hand on her. Maradona, the serial liar, is now Maradona, the serial slapper. Maradona has said he never did anything he's been accused of, including cocaine. He served a ban for that.
It's not an easy time for legends. Those who should gently slip into the night or into mundane life are screaming headlines in this social media-led world. And the English haven't forgotten the Hand of God. And they are taking vicarious pleasure in unmasking the woman beater Maradona is now.
