5 fast smartphones with great battery life

DailyBiteMay 26, 2018 | 15:56 IST

Even though fancy displays, processors and cameras get the most attention when it comes to smartphones, it is often the humble battery pack that despite being ignored keeps your phone running for hours and hours. For a modern-day smartphone which brings with it the promise of running tens of thousands of applications, the battery pack is arguably the most crucial cog in the complex machine.

With most buyers focusing on phones with bigger displays and faster and more power-hungry processors, the humble battery pack that actually brings all the magic to life is often forgotten. But having said that, a big battery on a low spec, or worse a badly designed phone is also of no use.

So with that in mind, here's our list of five phones that provide the best battery life and also impress when it comes to performance.

Redmi Note 5 Pro

Over the years, Xiaomi has introduced a number of interesting devices under the Redmi Note line-up. However, its flagship Redmi Note device of 2018, the Note 5 Pro, stands head and shoulders above all that it has created yet. The Redmi Note 5 Pro boasts of a new 5.99-inch display that is tall and bezel-less. In terms of the specs, the Redmi Note 5 Pro's display is FHD+ panel with a 2160x1080p resolution and 403ppi pixel density.

Interestingly though, Xiaomi has managed to put in this bigger display on the phone without increasing the size of the device from the previous year. However, because of this, the bezels on the top and the bottom of the phone have been shaved to a near minimum to give this phone an edge-to-edge look.

In terms of specs, the Note 5 Pro comes with a powerful Snapdragon 636 which makes it by far the most powerful and energy-efficient phone from the Redmi Note line-up. Paired with the SoC is up to 6GB of RAM and a maximum of 64GB internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 128GB via a hybrid micro-SD card slot.

In terms of cameras, the Redmi Note 5 Pro offers a 12-megapixel primary sensor with f/2.2 aperture paired with a 5-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture at the back. The camera module supports electronic image stabilisation and phase detection autofocus. Xiaomi also claims that this depth-sensing dual camera set-up also makes use of machine learning for greatly improving picture quality.

On the front, Xiaomi has equipped the device with a 20-megapixel selfie camera with a Sony IMX376 sensor, LED selfie light and Beautify 4.0 tuned for the Indian market. The phone provides above par battery performance too as it brings with it a 4,000mAh battery — albeit one that doesn't support fast charging.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro

Taiwanese smartphone maker, Asus, recently announced the Zenfone Max Pro, which since its release has been received pretty well by the audience. A major reason behind this is the phone's battery life. Equipped with a massive 5000mAh battery working in tandem with stock Android, the device provides great battery life.

The Max Pro borrows from the DNA of the phones that Asus has created in the past. At the centre of it is a 5.99-inch bezel-less display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The FullHD+ (2160x1080) display covered by the 2.5D glass on top merges seamlessly into the phone's metal frame.

The phone that comes with an industrial design sees Asus add a vertically mounted dual camera set-up on the top left corner and a fingerprint scanner at the back of the device. In terms of specs, the phone's frame packs a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC paired with up to 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The phone starts at Rs 10,999 for the 3GB RAM variant and goes up to 14,999 for the 6GB one.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2

Next up is the giant from Xiaomi, the Mi Max 2. Though it does not entirely deserve to be in the list on the basis of core specs, the fact that it comes with a massive 6.44-inch display and an even bigger battery gives it a unique advantage over the competition in the segment.

The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM hidden neatly under the hood. The package gets its juice from a massive 5300mAh battery that Xiaomi promises is good enough for watching videos for up to 18 hours, 10 days of music playback, nine hours of gaming, and up to 57 hours of talk time.

Priced at Rs 15,999, this is a phone that should definitely be considered in the price range.

OnePlus 6

Although the phone does not come with a massive pack, its DASH charge capabilities more than make up for the slightly lower mAH count. Starting at Rs 34,999, and going all the way up to Rs 44,999, the phone is available in 6GB+64GB and 8GB+128GB RAM and storage variants.

In a stark departure from the previous generation OnePlus phones, it comes with a new design scheme that brings with it an iPhone-style notch at the top with minimal bezel at the bottom making it look very different from the OnePlus phones of the past.

The device is packed with the fastest hardware that 2018 has to offer. As such, performance wise, this is the fastest OnePlus smartphone yet, and if the phone-maker is to be believed, arguably the fastest in the industry too. In terms of specs, it is powered by 2.7GHz Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor paired with 6/8GB of RAM and comes with 16+20 Megapixel dual camera setup at the back.

Nokia 7 Plus

Another phone that impresses greatly with its battery life and performs well too, is the Nokia 7 Plus. Being marketed as the "all-rounder", the 7 Plus brings with it a 3800mAh battery pack that gives close to two hours of moderate-heavy usage on a single charge.

With a beautiful 6-inch Full HD+ bezel-less screen, the Nokia 7 Plus doesn't feel boxy and old, but a seamless, forward-looking phone that tries to strike a sweet balance between powerful specs and looks without raising the price tag too high.

Nokia 7 Plus sports a dual camera setup — a 12-megapixel sensor paired with a 13-megapixel telephoto sensor. There also a 16-megapixel selfie camera on the front. Under the hood, the device packs a Snapdragon 660 SoC paired with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 265GB using a MicroSD.
