Why some reviewers are burning, freezing and crushing their iPhone X sets

DailyBiteNovember 27, 2017 | 17:21 IST

Arguably the most anticipated phone of the year, the iPhone X finally went on sale on November 3. This device, announced to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the launch of the first iPhone, is hard to get not only because of its high price – starting at Rs 89,000 for the 64GB and going up to Rs 1,02,000 for the 256GB variant – but also because only a limited number of handsets is being manufactured by Apple right now.

Suffice to say the price and short supply should ideally make each and every iPhone X unit akin to a collector's item worth cherishing for life. But looks like that's not the case. Despite its high price and supply issues, the iPhone X – much like many of its predecessors – has had to face brutalities that make you question the absurdity of the affluent times we live in.

Though the iPhone lineup has never really been known for its durability, it is a common obsession of many brave users to subject their phones to brutal durability tests – mostly for the kicks and sometimes to test the limits of their phone's durability.

Currently, there are hundreds of extreme durability test videos of the new iPhone X on Youtube that pit the device against not just its usual adversaries – water, ground, and all that can scratch its gorgeous glass back and front – but also against some frankly bizarre opponents such as a train or high powered burning lasers!

Though we don't endorse violence, we can't deny this torture of iPhone Xs isn't fun to watch. So without wasting more time, let's cut to the chase and find out what are the most creative ways in which you can test (read torture) your iPhone Xs' durability.

iPhone X vs Water

The latest iPhone was announced with an IP67 rating thus making it splash and dust resistant, but also water-resistant when submerged at a depth of 1 meter (3 Feet) or less. YouTube channel, EverythingApplePro, puts that claim to test by putting the new iPhone X through serious hoops, the last of which sees the phone being thrown into a washing machine.

iPhone X drop test

If you've spent upwards of a lakh on the new iPhone, the last thing you'd want is for your phone to slip out of your hand and shatter the glass front or the back. Reports suggest the new iPhone X will take upwards of Rs 25,000 to rid its display of cracks. Expensive right?

So it's only prudent to see how the device does against concrete in extreme drop tests before shelling out a huge chunk of your salary on it.

iPhone X 1,000 feet drop test

If the extreme drop test wasn't enough, how about taking the iPhone to a height of 1,000 feet and dropping it from there? Well, let's see how the device fares this extreme drop in this video posted on YouTube by UnlockRiver.com.

iPhone X extreme burn test

Next up to test the iPhone X's durability is nature favourite destroyer – fire. Though Apple's latest phone does not claim to be fireproof, YouTube channel TechRex still saw it fit to put the phone through a barbaric test that sees the iPhone X and the Galaxy Note 8 go up against fire to test which phone is more durable.

Not that it should be an influencer in any buying decision, but it will be reassuring to know that the iPhone X does come out working and looking slightly better than the Galaxy S8 when put through fire.

iPhone X Freeze test

However unlikely, if you ever had questions about the iPhone X's ability to survive being frozen in solid ice, then this extreme test will answer them for you. Put under extreme cold and frozen in ice at -35°C for 12 hours, Apple's latest device again comes out breathing.

iPhone X vs Katana

Well, there's nothing to be said about this durability test because it's completely insane. YouTube channel Gizmoslip pits a brand new iPhone X against a deadly Katana – traditionally-made Japanese sword used by Samurai warriors. Suffice to say this was a battle that the iPhone X was destined to lose. But, for what it's worth, it can't be denied watching the device being destroyed by a sharp sword does have some cathartic value to it.

iPhone X vs Train

Ever wondered what happens to an iPhone X when it goes up against the might of a 1,000 tonne train? Well, nothing good it seems. Here's an iPhone X prototype being thrown in the deep end of the madnesss.

iPhone X vs Firecrackers

If lighting up your Diwali (and the environment) with a 10,000 "Mirchi Bomb" strip wasn't enough, then how about throwing an uber expensive iPhone X into the mix?

iPhone X vs Bowling ball

Guess what happens to an iPhone when it challenges a mighty bowling ball? It dies. Watch the video to see how.

Bonus: Best way to remove the annoying camera notch

Many tech experts and Apple fans have raged against Apple's idea of including the black notch right at the top of the iPhone X. The notch holds within it the hardware for Face ID and front camera, but if you're still not cool with it, here's what you can do to cut the problem out (literally).
