The day Bihar declares its winners and losers, the Indian Premiere League would also have a title winner and many title losers. Now if you go by the logic that participation is what counts, there is no need to count the votes. But results count and hence results of both the ongoing contests would be announced on November 10.
On November 12, the Indian squad will fly off to Australia for an India-Australia contest, which takes off on November 27. The good news for Team India is that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has found a kit sponsor. Only this sponsor won’t pay BCCI as much as the previous one did. Nike earlier paid Rs 87 lakh per match to BCCI for getting its name on players’ kits and clothes. The current one will pay Rs 65 lakh per match. Who is this sponsor? Fantasy league MPL, whose brand ambassador is captain Virat Kohli.
Coming to the contest in Bihar, the second phase of polling will be held tomorrow across 17 districts and 94 seats. And ahead of the polling, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar made a second comeback on BJP posters in Bihar along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His first comeback was on the day of the first phase of polling on October 28.
But actor Deepika Padukone’s manager Karishma Prakash is still missing from the Narcotic Control Bureau’s net. Unable to handover the summons summoning Karishma to NCB office for questioning, the NCB has handed over the summons to Karishma’s mother to hand it over to her.
Patanjali, meanwhile, has handed over 25,00,000 kits of Coronil to people who have in turn handed over Rs 2,50,00,00,000 to Patanjali ever since the ‘immunity booster’ was launched as a corona cure. The kits have been sold both in India and abroad. That is ‘vocal for local’ and ‘local for global’ all rolled into one.
From Baba Ramdev to Baba Ka Dhaba. Remember that Delhi eatery which went viral after food blogger Gaurav Wasan posted a video of a teary-eyed 80-year-old couple and Delhi poured its heart out helping them? Now Kanta Prasad has filed a complaint against Gaurav Wasan of allegedly misappropriating funds that came in for Baba Ka Dhaba. What happened? You can read here.
That was today. Tomorrow, US will be voting at polling booths to elect its President. All postal voting will also come to an end tomorrow. It could take about a week before we know the final result of the elections because votes coming through posts will take time to come and be counted. Firearm sales in US, meanwhile, are rising since there is uncertainty expected in the interim.
Firearm sales in the US also rose when the pandemic struck. Can you shoot coronavirus with a gun? Under Donald Trump’s America, Donald Trump did think about killing the ‘Chinese virus’ by injecting disinfectant into the human body.
Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, however, is having ‘no’ for breakfast. Asked about her advice for women, during a Q&A, Harris said, “You never have to ask anyone permission to lead. I have in my career been told many times, 'It's not your time', 'It's not your turn'. Let me just tell you, I eat 'no' for breakfast. So, I would recommend the same. It's a hearty breakfast.”
That would be a good weight-loss diet too. Only you don’t have to take it literally. Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati has said ‘no’ to an alliance with BJP in the future. What if there is no other option? She’d rather retire, she said. The clarification came days after Mayawati vowed to defeat candidates of Samajwadi Party even if that meant voting for the BJP. So Mayawati has said this also and that also. You can’t later hold her to account for saying this or that now.
In Madhya Pradesh, however, Kamal Nath continues to be a star – star campaigner that is. The Supreme Court has put a stay on the Election Commission order which brought ‘the star’ to ground for some unsavoury comments made against BJP candidate Imarti Devi. Now, campaigning in Madhya Pradesh has stopped because the polling for byelections is to happen tomorrow, but Nath’s star status has nevertheless been restored. Also, the SC has told the EC, “You have no power.” The EC has many powers. The SC was talking about the power to decide star campaigners for a party.
In 1965, on this day, a star was born. Humans aren’t born stars, they become one. So did Shah Rukh Khan. At 55, his stardom has remained unclouded even though he has announced no new project since Zero released in 2018 and lived up to its title in terms of its acceptance among fans.
Since it is his birthday, his fans and family have been wishing him a happy birthday. Daughter Suhana dropped a two-in-one birthday wish for dad SRK and friend Shanaya Kapoor when the clock struck 12 midnight, on her Insta story.
Kolkata Knight Riders wished him before it was 12 and topped the wishes with a gift - winning their IPL match against Rajasthan Royals.
You may appreciate wishes, but you sure love gifts more. Among the many people who dropped wishes (if they dropped gifts too, we do not know) was SRK’s old friend and choreographer Farah Khan. We mention Farah because you do know they had a fallout after being known as the Jai-Veeru ki jodi in the industry. Farah’s wish just reminded us that at one point, it looked there would be no truce.
The truce still happened. Do you know who made it possible? According to Farah, it was Gauri Khan.
After Farah and SRK made Om Shanti Om (2007), the choreographer-cum-director wanted to cast her friend in Tees Maar Khan (2010). But then the spat happened and Farah went with Akshay Kumar. The movie tanked and maybe SRK would have thanked the spat for not being asked to act in it.
Still, when Farah was penning Happy New Year (2014), SRK called his friend and said he wanted to be in the movie. She mailed the script to SRK and then Gauri stepped into the picture.
She called Farah and asked her to fly to London and meet SRK. It was in London that the deal was finalised. Even though the first call came from SRK, Farah credits Gauri for the patch-up.
Farah doesn’t even credit her brother Sajid Khan, who apparently called Gauri first. Gauri then asked Farah and Shirish Kunder, her husband, to come over to their house. Everyone sat together and settled whatever disputes there were.
But everybody is not together to celebrate birthdays because everybody is together in fighting Covid which requires everybody to remain distant.
People in most parts are fighting pollution along with the pandemic. Scientists say the coronavirus can tag along PM2.5 and become deadlier. Don’t blame us for bringing in the bad news. We are just the messengers.
But let’s talk pollution first. What saves you from corona, also to an extent, saves you from pollution – the mask.
Pollution, the Word Of The Day, comes from Latin word ‘polluere’, which means ‘to soil or defile’. When your air is defiled, it is polluted. The air we are breathing, is however, poisonous. But you can pollute not just air, but also water, land and minds. What is worst is difficult to say so we would not say it.
But Oxford dictionary says, pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that causes ‘adverse’ change. The fine to pollute the natural environment in NCR is up to Rs 1,00,00,00,000 and a jail term of five years. Pollution is a round-the-year problem and so is the promise to fight it. Only pollution is more visible when farm fires start in North India.
To save yourself from pollution and corona, stay at home if you don’t absolutely have to step out. And spend the time at home watching and reading what you had been planning to watch and read. If you want our recommendation, Ponniyin Selvan - the epic - by Kalki Krishnamurthy it is.
Also while, we are at home, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said, Chinese soldiers are in theirs. The Defence Minister said the situation at the border is under control.
On that note of assurance that everyone is safely in their homes, we will say bye for today.
See you tomorrow when Bihar and the US both set out to vote.
