In a bizarre case from Uttar Pradesh's Unnao, a man ordered small statues of Hindu deities online from Amazon for Rs 165, buried them in his field and later told the villagers that the idols surfaced while he was tilling the ground. The villagers began worshipping them. Then, a delivery boy spilled the beans.

What happened: The incident happened at the Mahmudpur village of Unnao. A man named Ashok ordered small statues of Hindu deities - a Dhan Laxmi Kuber Bhandari Yantra - on Amazon for Rs 165, buried them in his field, and later told the villagers that he found the idols while tilling the ground. He also said that he had dreamt something like this would happen. The villagers took him for his word and began worshipping them. They also pooled in money for a makeshift temple with the idols.

How police cracked the case:

Police cracked the case by getting information from the delivery executive Gorelal who lived in the same village and who delivered the idols to Ashok and his family. Gorelal told the police that he had delivered the idols to Ashok's family on August 29.

On Wednesday, when Ashok and his two sons, Vijay and  Ravi carried the idols to their fields and started their rituals, police stormed the scene and arrested the three from the family. The idols meanwhile were placed at Ashok's house.

In a viral video, a policeman can be seen telling an old woman, duped by Ashok into believing his story, that the idols were ordered online and that they hadn't emerged from the field.

What the police said: Pankaj Singh, Circle Officer, Bangarmau Police, said that Ashok and his two sons fooled the villagers by telling them that one of them dreamt that the idols were buried in their field. Police also said that the trio staged this whole drama to dupe the villagers.

The cops also seized Amazon billing details of the idols. Ashok had ordered the deities online for Rs 165.

In the end, the free delivery cost him a lot.
