Three reasons why #ModiScaredOfArvind trended on Twitter

Soon after Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar was arrested by the Delhi Police on Tuesday morning in the fake law degree case, #ModiScaredOfArvind started trending at the top on microblogging site Twitter. Tomar, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal received massive support from the Twitterati who took on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre.

These were the three main issues which were discussed by Tomar supporters:

1. Controversies dogging the BJP

Comparisons were drawn with the controversies regarding educational qualification of Union human resource development minister, Smriti Irani, Modi’s marital status and alleged rape case against Union minister of state for panchayati raj, Nihalchand.

Irani is facing the heat for mentioning three different educational qualifications in three separate affidavits to the election commission. In one affidavit, she claimed to have completed her bachelors from Delhi University (DU); in another, she said she completed BCom Part I from School of Correspondence; while in the third affidavit, she claimed she did her BCom Part I from School of Open Learning (DU). Irani’s case is also being heard in a Delhi court.

Modi had left the column for marital status blank in earlier affidavits, while he mentioned that he was married in the affidavit filed for the Lok Sabha elections in 2014.

Nihalchand is an accused in a rape case and is wanted by the Rajasthan Police. Those criticising the Delhi Police’s decision to arrest Tomar have demanded the action against the prime minister and his two ministerial colleagues first.

2. Hasty arrest

The people have questioned the timing of the arrest. They allege that the Delhi Police showed undue haste in arresting the minister. They said the matter is already sub judice. The police should have first investigated the case, filed a chargesheet and presented it before the court. They should have arrested Tomar if he had refused to cooperate with the investigations or had tried to influence the evidence.

The Twitterati alleged that the police acted in haste because the anti-corruption bureau had started investigating “big” corruption cases like the 2002 CNG scam and accused lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung of trying to shield senior officers.

3. Farcical excercise

Towards the evening, Tomar’s supporters got a boost when the Saket court, where the minister was produced, termed the arrest as a “farcical exercise”. Armed with this judicial observation, the Twitterati came down heavily on the Modi government.
