Few tips for Arvind Kejriwal's AAP on how to rule Delhi

The people of Delhi have given an overwhelming endorsement to the Aam Aadmi Party. Everyone should respect this and look for a way forward. In a democratic society, for someone to truly function as a political leader, the people must stand with him.

Politics is not idle talk - it decides where the nation goes. So it is very important that responsible people with a strong sense of integrity move into the political scenario. More than 60 years ago, people of this land threw their lives on the street for the sake of the country. But since then, the general sense of integrity in the country has fallen. There is no point in just blaming the politician, because in a democracy, he is one of us. We are only electing the kind of leaders we deserve.

If you and I are people who have some sense of integrity, there need not be corruption in this world. It is only because people are already corrupt that the nation and world are corrupt. Corruption exists in every country and culture; it is usually in the context of getting favours. A few people participate in it, but the common man, who just wants to earn his living, is not touched by it on a day-to-day basis. But in India, we have now created a culture where corruption has become our way, and we are no more ashamed of it. Corruption has become a national malaise. When this is the situation, unless we raise the integrity of the nation itself, we cannot suddenly expect politics to be clean. These elections are a display of the Delhi people's longing for a new kind of politics. I hope everyone in the political arena takes note of this and offers what the people of India truly deserve.

It is Anna Hazare's dream to create a corruption-free government and Delhi is a wonderful demonstration ground for the AAP to establish this, as it is a one-city state. As a part of this, the party, which is still in its infancy, should move away from its activist origins and not look for vigilante solutions to the various problems that face our capital city. Agitation and administration are two different dimensions altogether. Agitation played a crucial role in the pre-independence era, when we were an occupied nation. It was useful in dislocating the state. We mastered the talent of dislocating the state. The art of running a state, however, is very different. If we continue with the same activist hangover, we will dismantle the very fundamentals of the nation. With such a powerful mandate from the people, it is time for the AAP to work towards a stable and responsible administration. The image of Delhi is the image of India, so it is important that AAP always keeps this in their vision. I hope they will be able to create a capital city that all of us will be proud of.
