CCTV footage of Sidharth being hit by a car is a horrific reality of Delhi

Rape capital it already is. But Delhi can add yet another tag to its album of notoriety - that of being the road rage capital.

Capturing in all its gory details is this CCTV footage of the brutal murder of 30-year-old Sidharth Sharma by a speeding Mercedes Benz that had a minor on the wheels.

It clearly shows Sharma looking both ways and crossing a nearly empty crossing when the out-of-control Mercedes rammed into him, with the impact flinging him several feet into the air. He landed at least 15 metres away and suffered fatal injuries.

The incident, which took place at 8:55pm on Monday at Delhi's Civil Lines area, near Ludlow Castle School, has sent a shiver down Delhi's spine.

With the neo-rich flaunting their ill-gotten money and displaying little respect for rules and regulations, the roads of Delhi have become veritable killing fields. Not only do the denizens of Delhi routinely flout traffic regulations, breach the Motor Vehicles Act by allowing a minor to drive when the legal age for driving is 18 years, many of us show acute disregard and lack of compassion for the pedestrians on the road.

Delhi is easily one of the most pedestrian-unfriendly cities in the world, with its tree-lined wide streets showing little room for those on the foot. Just like the 17-year-old Class XII student (who, by the way, would turn 18 in just a few days from now) was given the licence to kill, many a teenager with affluent parents get away with nastiest of crimes in the national capital.

In this case, if "proven guilty", the minor is likely to spend only three months in juvenile custody and pay a meagre fine of Rs 1,000.

Even a near-empty road can send you to your death if it's located in Delhi - that's the spine-chilling message from the CCTV footage. This was no accident, but murder. Murder borne out of utter disregard for the law of the land.

Shame.
