Black money: Why India thinks Modi hasn't kept his promise

Last week, the Modi government passed a law strengthening punishment against the possession of black money. instaVaani, a polling technology app, did a survey of 401 respondents on the issue - a key promise in BJP's poll manifesto for the 2014 general elections.

A year on, instaVaani asked respondents if the government had done enough to curb black money. The results are hardly in the government's favour.

Here's what people think:

50 per cent of respondents felt the government needs to do better.

This came in the wake of another question. Where does black money figure on their list of priorities? Has the sense of urgency around this faded since the election?

A significant 77 per cent said it was important to them.

Would the newly passed black money Bill be used to harass ordinary citizens?

The respondents were divided on this, with 39 per cent saying that there was potential for harassment.

39 per cent disagreed, while a fourth had no opinion. It remains to be seen how the new law will be implemented - this will go a long way in determining both its effectiveness and its long term popularity.

Finally, we asked if the government should prioritise black money in India over bringing back fortune stashed abroad.

A majority - 62 per cent said that domestic black money scored over funds hidden overseas, with 24 per cent disagreeing and 14 per cent having no opinion on this.
