Zaira Wasim apology throws up uncomfortable questions

Dangal girl Zaira Wasim has triggered a storm by her posts on social media. She began by saying she had to clarify or apologise to the people who she thinks were hurt by her recent meetings.

The fact remains that she met J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti in Jammu and the meeting was publicised and hyped by the government's PR wing. She was also seen sharing the dais at a privately organised function with the state's PHE minister.

Since then, she has been receiving a lot of flak from social media trolls. Many questioned her decision to meet the CM and other ministers, when the wounds of those who lost their loved ones to the recent unrest in the Valley - post the death of Burhan Wani - are still fresh.

It is important to understand that the target is the CM and politicians who the critics believe haven't been able to give justice to the victims of unrest.

Zaira's work in films has not been questioned. Having said that, there are important questions from this entire controversy that beg answers:

- In a place like Kashmir, should politicians and ministers call and meet talented people like Zaira? If they do, should such meetings be widely promoted at a time when the Valley is yet to come out of a violent and turbulent phase?

- Why target Zaira? Shouldn't the critics see that she is after all a talented young girl who has proved her mettle with her brilliant performance in a blockbuster movie. If there is anger against the politicians, why make her the target? Doesn't that make the entire act look intolerant?
