The other Eid &amp;mdash; Eid ul-Fitr &amp;mdash; is the festival of the breaking of the fast, the end of Ramzan when Muslims observe Roza. That was on May 14 this year.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_6'&gt;For the non-Muslims and the uninitiated, it can be confusing as both the festivals are called Eid, and the greeting is &amp;ldquo;Eid Mubarak&amp;rdquo;. The word &lt;em&gt;Al&lt;/em&gt; or أل in Arabic means &amp;ldquo;the&amp;rdquo; and our &lt;strong&gt;Word Of The Day&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Adha&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; or أَضْحَى in Arabic means &amp;ldquo;sacrificial animal&amp;rdquo; or &amp;ldquo;victim&amp;rdquo;. It comes from another Arabic word &lt;em&gt;ḍaḥḥā&lt;/em&gt; or ضَحَّى that translates to 'sacrifice&amp;rdquo; or &amp;ldquo;immolate&amp;rdquo;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_9'&gt;While it may sound ominous, the story of Eid al-Adha is the one marking utmost devotion to the almighty. It is marked to commemorate the Quranic tale of Prophet Ibrahim&amp;rsquo;s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God. It is said that God was pleased with his willingness and devotion and replaced the son with a ram.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_10'&gt;It is customary to sacrifice an animal, usually a goat, earning the festival the alternate name of Bakrid. The asteroid, named '2008Go20' is about 220 metres in diameter &amp;mdash; roughly about the size of a stadium, bigger than an average cricket ground and thrice the size of the Taj Mahal, to put it in perspective.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_22'&gt;&lt;img title='main_asteroid_getty_072121061131.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/202107/main_asteroid_getty_072121061131.jpg' alt='main_asteroid_getty_072121061131.jpg' /&gt;&lt;strong class='editor_embed_cls'&gt;A huge asteroid will whizz past the Earth on July 24. (Photo: Getty) &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_23'&gt;It is hurtling towards Earth at a very high speed &amp;mdash; at eight kilometres per second, or about 28,800 km/hour. However, you don&amp;rsquo;t need to worry much about it hitting you, as it is said to pass Earth at a relatively safe distance &amp;mdash; about 4.7 million kilometres away &amp;mdash; roughly eight times the distance between the Earth and Moon.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_24'&gt;However, did you know about the largest asteroid impact in recorded history? You might not have, because it was over a hundred years ago. And it was explosive &amp;mdash; literally.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_25'&gt;Named the Tunguska Event, this enormous explosion is estimated to have occurred at 7.14 am (give or take one minute) on June 30, 1908. It was at an altitude of 15,000 to 30,000 feet (for perspective, the height of Mount Everest is 8,849 metres - 29,032 feet). The energy of the explosion is estimated to have an explosive force of as much as 15 megatons of TNT&amp;mdash; thousand times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_26'&gt;&lt;img title='main_tunguska_first_072121061010.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/202107/main_tunguska_first_072121061010.jpg' alt='main_tunguska_first_072121061010.jpg' /&gt;&lt;strong class='editor_embed_cls'&gt;Vast areas were flattened by a meteorite in Tunguska in 1908. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_27'&gt;And the impact of the celestial explosion was such that it flattened some 2,000 square kilometres and charred more than 100 square kilometres of pine forest near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in central Siberia.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_28'&gt;While some scientists contend that a comet caused the explosion, others firmly believe that it was caused by an asteroid, perhaps 50 to 100 metres in diameter &amp;mdash; half the size of the asteroid set to whizz past Earth on Friday.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_29'&gt;The best part is that the Tunguska Event left no crater impact. The only likely remains of the object (comet or asteroid) are a few small fragments, each less than a millimetre across. This Eid is celebrated to commemorate the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim, who willingly agreed to kill his son at the behest of God.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_3'&gt;Known as the &amp;lsquo;salty Eid&amp;rsquo; this festival is known for the mutton dishes that dominate the feast. As tradition goes, the festival involves sacrificing an animal and sharing the meat with family, friends and poor people. The goal is to ensure every person gets to eat meat and thereby promoting a message of kindness and equality.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_4'&gt;From &lt;em&gt;Gosht Khichda&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Kaleji ka saalan&lt;/em&gt; to &lt;em&gt;Bhuni Raan&lt;/em&gt;, the day is all about meat. However, the highlight of the day is mutton &lt;em&gt;biryani. &lt;/em&gt;This dish requires you to prepare the rice, the crispy garnish, and marinate and cook the mutton separately. Avoid shoulder cut)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_23'&gt;A tablespoon of garam masala&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_24'&gt;A tablespoon of garlic paste&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_25'&gt;A tablespoon of ginger paste&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_26'&gt;Three tablespoons of raw papaya paste&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_27'&gt;Four tablespoons of hung curd&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_28'&gt;One lemon&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_29'&gt;A teaspoon of coriander powder&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_30'&gt;A teaspoon of cumin powder&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_31'&gt;A tablespoon of red chilli powder&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_32'&gt;A teaspoon of salt&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_33'&gt;&lt;strong&gt;For the layering:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_34'&gt;Four onions, thinly sliced&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_35'&gt;Four green chillies&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_36'&gt;Two tomatoes, finely chopped&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_37'&gt;A teaspoon of saffron strands, crushed to a powder&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_38'&gt;A quarter cup of warm milk&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_39'&gt;Five tablespoons of &lt;em&gt;ghee&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_40'&gt;Vegetable oil&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_41'&gt;Rosewater and kewra essence&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_42'&gt;A quarter cup of coriander leaves and stems, finely chopped&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_43'&gt;Two tablespoons of fresh mint, julienned&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_44'&gt;&lt;img title='main_hyderabadi-mutt_072121125938.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/202107/main_hyderabadi-mutt_072121125938.jpg' alt='main_hyderabadi-mutt_072121125938.jpg' /&gt;&lt;strong class='editor_embed_cls'&gt;Photo: Facebook&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_45'&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How to:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_46'&gt;First marinate the mutton by adding the curd, ginger-garlic paste, raw papaya paste, chilli powder, salt, lemon juice, garam masala to the mutton. Mix well and allow it to marinate for three hours.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_47'&gt;Next, prepare the fried onions by heating the oil in a pan on medium flame. Once it is hot enough, add the onion slices (separate the slices first) and fry them they are golden-brown. It is important to separate the slices and fry them in small batches. Otherwise, you will have a lumpy messy of onions.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_48'&gt;Remove from the pan and drain the excess oil on a paper-towel-lined plate.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_49'&gt;To cook the mutton, first heat three tablespoons of &lt;em&gt;ghee&lt;/em&gt; in a thick-bottomed pan. Add the remaining sliced onions and green chillies. Keep stirring continuously till the onions are light golden brown.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_50'&gt;Add the ginger paste and the garlic paste. Mix well. Once the raw smell goes away, add the marinated mutton and cook on high heat for seven to eight minutes.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_51'&gt;Add the coriander powder, cumin powder and red chilli powder. Mix thoroughly and stir in three cups of water. Bring it to a boil and then reduce the heat. Cover it and cook until mutton is almost done.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_52'&gt;Now add the tomatoes, garam masala powder, a dash of fresh coriander leaves and salt. Cook for 15 minutes more on medium heat, stirring occasionally. By this time the &lt;em&gt;ghee&lt;/em&gt; would have separated from the spices, and the meat would not have any watery gravy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_53'&gt;To prepare the rice. Wash the rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Soak it in cold water for half an hour. Drain all the water out.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_54'&gt;Tie the whole spices &amp;mdash; cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, &lt;em&gt;javitri&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;jaiphal&lt;/em&gt;, black peppercorn, shahi jeera, and star anise &amp;mdash; in a small square of muslin cloth and make a &lt;em&gt;potli&lt;/em&gt; of it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_55'&gt;In a pan, boil 750 ml of water. Once it is boiling, add the rice, bay leaf, salt and spice potli. Cover and cook until the rice is al dente. Drain and set aside.&amp;nbsp;Remove the &lt;em&gt;potli&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_56'&gt;Next, prepare the saffron milk. In a small bowl, stir together the saffron powder (saffron strands crushed with a pestle) and the milk. Dissolve it, cover and wait for 20 minutes. Add rose water and kewra essence to this. Mix well, cover and set it aside.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_57'&gt;To layer the &lt;em&gt;biryani&lt;/em&gt;, heat two tablespoons of &lt;em&gt;ghee&lt;/em&gt; in a large heavy bottom pan with a tight-fitting lid. Coat the base and the sides of the pan well with &lt;em&gt;ghee&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_58'&gt;Add a thin layer of basmati rice in a heavy-bottomed pot. Add a layer of sauce, and a few slices of the lemon. Cover with the remaining rice. Sprinkle cold water on the top and drizzle the saffron milk over it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_59'&gt;Now add a layer of rice. Then add the cooked meat pieces, sprinkle saffron water, add fried onion slices and &lt;em&gt;ghee&lt;/em&gt;. Keep the flame at the lowest and cook the &lt;em&gt;biryani&lt;/em&gt; for 40 minutes.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_62'&gt;Ensure that your pan is heavy-bottomed or the rice will burn. If you don&amp;rsquo;t have a heavy-bottomed pan, place a flat &lt;em&gt;tawa&lt;/em&gt; on the stove and put the pan on top of that.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_63'&gt;After 40 minutes, turn the heat off and let the &lt;em&gt;biryani&lt;/em&gt; sit for another 10 minutes.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_64'&gt;Once the rice is cooked, mix with a light hand using a wide-rimmed spatula. We wish you a lot of happiness, joy and good health.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_2'&gt;Today we will not be talking to you about immunity, health or anything that even slightly hampers the festive mood. Instead, we bring you the mandatory Eid dessert that will light up your face (and palate) the minute we say the name. Sheer Khurma.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_3'&gt;This must-make dessert traces its origin to Persia (Iran). &lt;em&gt;Sheer&lt;/em&gt; means milk in Persian and &lt;em&gt;Khurma&lt;/em&gt; means dates, which means &amp;lsquo;milk cooked with dates&amp;rsquo;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_4'&gt;Now, no Eid is complete without Sheer Khurma, and most definitely not Eid-ul-Fitr. So with no further ado, let us delve into this delight.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_5'&gt;The rich and creamy &lt;em&gt;sevai&lt;/em&gt; (vermicelli) pudding is made by cooking milk and dates with fine vermicelli, dry fruits and ghee, until they all combine together to form a delicacy a single serving of which will not be enough.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_6'&gt;&lt;img title='main_sheer-khurma_ge_051321104603.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/202105/main_sheer-khurma_ge_051321104603.jpg' alt='main_sheer-khurma_ge_051321104603.jpg' /&gt;&lt;strong class='editor_embed_cls'&gt;Photo: Getty Images&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_7'&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What you&amp;rsquo;ll need:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_8'&gt;One litre of whole milk (full cream) &amp;mdash; please don&amp;rsquo;t compromise on this with toned milk. You will need all the creaminess you can muster.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_9'&gt;Ten seedless dates, chopped&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_10'&gt;150 grams of fine vermicelli&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_11'&gt;A quarter cup of sugar (optional &amp;mdash; for the extra sweetness. Feel free to skip, if the sweetness of dates is enough for you)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_12'&gt;Three tablespoons of ghee&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_13'&gt;Four cloves, whole&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_14'&gt;A handful of almonds, crushed&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_15'&gt;A handful of cashew nuts, crushed&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_16'&gt;A handful of raisins, whole&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_17'&gt;Two tablespoons pistachios (unsalted), crushed&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_18'&gt;2 tablespoons &lt;em&gt;chironji&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_19'&gt;15-20 strands of saffron soaked in two tablespoons of warm milk (optional, but strongly recommended)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_20'&gt;Half a teaspoon of cardamom powder&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_21'&gt;&lt;img title='main_sheer-khurma_051321104730.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/202105/main_sheer-khurma_051321104730.jpg' alt='main_sheer-khurma_051321104730.jpg' /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_22'&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How to:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_23'&gt;In a large heavy-bottom pan, heat the ghee on medium flame. Once it is hot enough, add the cloves, almonds, cashew nuts, raisins, pistachios and the &lt;em&gt;chironji&lt;/em&gt; and fry until slightly browned. Remove from the fire and set aside on a plate.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_24'&gt;To the same pan, add the vermicelli and fry it on medium flame until it browns slightly. Keep stirring constantly to avoid burning. Remove from fire and set aside.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_25'&gt;Now add the milk and dates to the same pan and cook for about ten minutes, again on medium heat. &lt;p id='p_1'&gt;The muted reaction to the news of China pulling back its troops in the Galwan Valley left some wondering if they missed something. We are used to chest-thumping at the slightest hints of strategic victories; even the absence of it. And here was a whole announcement of China pulling back and yet no sign of hoopla. That was because China has left enough signs for us to not trust it. In 1962, we trusted China. And the same year, we paid the price for our trust.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_2'&gt;&lt;img title='army_070720031348.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/202007/army_070720031348.jpg' alt='army_070720031348.jpg' /&gt;&lt;strong class='editor_embed_cls'&gt;India is in talks with China to restore peace in the border areas.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;(Photo: Reuters)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_3'&gt;A newspaper headline from July 15, 1962, which has now gone viral, reads, &amp;lsquo;Chinese Troops Withdraw from Galwan Post&amp;rsquo;. Just 96 days later, on October 20, the Chinese-triggered Sino-Indian war had started. The rest was history till it happened again this year. There is another similarity between this year and that. The Pakistan involvement; or rather, the lack of it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_4'&gt;In 1962, China asked Pakistan to join the war on its side. But Pakistan didn&amp;rsquo;t. Wondering why? The answer lies in Bruce Riedel&amp;rsquo;s book &lt;em&gt;JFK&amp;rsquo;s Forgotten Crisis: Tibet, the CIA and the Sino-Indian War&lt;/em&gt;. Riedel was a former CIA official.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_5'&gt;Riedel writes that China made an offer to then Pakistani President Ayub Khan that if it was to join the war against India, it could get the &amp;lsquo;trophy&amp;rsquo; of Kashmir. Pakistan still did not overtly join the war. It turns out Ayub Khan was trying to forge a deal with the US to decide the terms of its not engaging in the war against India. Ayub Khan reportedly asked the US government, then being led by John F Kennedy, for Kashmir. Looks like even Ayub Khan did not trust China to keep its promises.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_6'&gt;&lt;img title='ayub_690_070720024823.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/202007/ayub_690_070720024823.jpg' alt='ayub_690_070720024823.jpg' /&gt;&lt;strong class='editor_embed_cls'&gt;(L - R):&amp;nbsp;US President John F Kennedy with Pakistan President Mohammad Ayub Khan of Pakistan and US Vice-President Lyndon B Johnson.&amp;nbsp;(Photo: jfklibrary.org)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_7'&gt;The US government, however, looking to curtail China&amp;rsquo;s growth, offered India an assistance of US $500 million (Rs 37,500 million). But Kennedy was assassinated before the deal could be struck. India lost the war. Pakistan which was too clever&amp;nbsp;by half,&amp;nbsp;failed to secure&amp;nbsp;any agreement on Kashmir from either China or the US. This led Ayub Khan to attack India three years later in 1965. Khan, a military dictator, lost the war.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_8'&gt;No matter who wins or who loses a war, both sides suffer. War, like the coronavirus, is better when prevented than confronted. So, even with all the justifiable mistrust against China, the disengagement brings relief. Since, it has come decoupled with the noisy chest-thumping, it is even more welcome.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_9'&gt;The use of the word disengage first appears around 1600 CE in a figurative sense, meaning &amp;ldquo;loosen from that which entangles&amp;rdquo;. We are telling you that because &lt;em&gt;&amp;lsquo;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;disengage&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;&amp;rsquo;&lt;/em&gt; is our &lt;strong&gt;Word Of The Day&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_10'&gt;The Oxford dictionary defines the word as &amp;ldquo;to free somebody/something from the person or thing that is holding them or it; to become free&amp;rdquo;. Disengagement from an engagement maybe a source of heartbreak and heartache, but to be free from that which &amp;lsquo;holds you down&amp;rsquo; is the heart&amp;rsquo;s desire. To disengage with an adversary like China is what the nation desires.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_11'&gt;We told you when it came to China, the US has sided with India, but that is nothing to be pompous about because the US won&amp;rsquo;t take sides if it had nothing to gain from taking sides. Also, US under Donald Trump can change sides all with two tweets &amp;ndash; one announcing support, the other denouncing it. So, while US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the United States is 'certainly looking at' banning Chinese social media apps, including TikTok, we say, &amp;ldquo;Good for them.&amp;rdquo;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_12'&gt;In news that is good for us, tourism in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir &lt;a href='https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/kashmir-to-reopen-tourism-soon-locals-skeptical-amid-covid-4g-internet-ban-1697899-2020-07-07' target='_blank'&gt;could resume soon&lt;/a&gt;. The decision was taken at a meeting, which is being called a high-level one because it was chaired by the highest administrative head of the UT, Lieutenant Governor GC Murmu.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_13'&gt;There is also some good news for those looking to buy &lt;em&gt;bakra&lt;/em&gt; for Bakra Eid (Eid ul-Adha) in Madhya Pradesh. The sale of goat has moved online to platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp. This is certainly bad news for the &lt;em&gt;bakra&lt;/em&gt; which has also been devalued amid the pandemic. With prices down by 20 per cent to 30 per cent, goats are selling in MP at about Rs 8,000-Rs 15,000. But do you know that a goat once sold for Rs 27 lakh?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_14'&gt;The deal happened in Pakistan&amp;rsquo;s Sindh. The man committed at least eight murders in just five years between 1990 and 1955. The guy&amp;rsquo;s original name was Keith Hunter Jesperson. Hunter hunted down women he met while travelling across the US. He travelled across the US because he was a truck driver.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_32'&gt;After Hunter killed his first victim Taunja Bennett, a woman falsely confessed to the murder. Why did she turn against herself? Well, she was trying to turn against her boyfriend. This woman who claimed &amp;lsquo;credit&amp;rsquo; for the murder implicated her boyfriend. The woman never told the man, '&lt;em&gt;Hum to dube hai sanam, tumko bhi le dubenge',&amp;nbsp;&lt;/em&gt;but both drowned, we mean, got convicted for the murder. This made Hunter desperate. Who wants someone else to get credit for their work?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_33'&gt;So, once while Hunter stopped on the way to take a leak at a bathroom, he signed his admission on the bathroom wall and ended the note with a smiley.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_34'&gt;Not sure this would be enough to get credit for the murders, Hunter sent letters to an Oregon newspaper and the Multnomah County district attorney's office, again signing them with smiley faces. This gave him the name &amp;lsquo;Happy Face Killer&amp;rsquo;. He was caught in 1995 for murdering his girlfriend and that is when he confessed to all the other killings. He was given multiple life sentences and is currently serving them in jail. &lt;p id='p_1'&gt;Tomorrow is Eid-ul-Azha. Tomorrow, once again this year, I won&amp;rsquo;t be celebrating Eid. There will be the obligatory sacrifice, but there won&amp;rsquo;t be any joy about the day that is about family, celebration, and laughter and food with family. But like most other days of my life, it would have one thing in abundance: gratitude.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_2'&gt;My family is not celebrating Eid this year because of the demise of my younger brother, Babar, on March 18, 2019. Never had I imagined that the pain of losing my brother would be so bad, so deep, so raw, so constant. Never had I known that it&amp;rsquo;d consume me more than the pain I felt when my mother left us on November 6, 1999. As I write today, I know a huge part of me died with my brother, my beloved Babari. My heart feels shattered in ways I didn&amp;rsquo;t know a heart was ever supposed to break. As I write today knowing I&amp;rsquo;d miss him tomorrow more than I did yesterday, there is another thing that moves within my mind like a restless, nervous, lost child in a crowd of strangers: gratitude.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_3'&gt;&lt;img title='family_081119015735.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/201908/family_081119015735.jpg' alt='family_081119015735.jpg' /&gt;&lt;span style='text-align: left; display: block; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; color: #000000;'&gt;&lt;strong&gt;This day is about family, celebration, and laughter and food with family. Trying to come to terms with the finality of death after my brother left us, I&amp;rsquo;m learning to value life with each moment of my life, moving in slow-mo, in a loop. The few people in my life &amp;mdash; my son, my niece, nephew, sister &amp;mdash; mean more to me than I would ever be able to encapsulate in words. Each day, even when hued in pain, is a celebration of all that is good and glorious, and to me that is the love of my son and my family &amp;ndash; mine for them, theirs for me. My gratitude for that love makes me look around me in wonder, every once in a while, how there is so much attention in this world on things that do not even matter. Love is not all that we need to survive. But love makes it possible to survive it all. The gratitude for that love changes it all.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_5'&gt;As I talked to my son, Musa, on a video call last night, while he was trying to arrange his things in his new apartment in New York, he told me how much he missed me. It is rare that he tells me that. We talk every day, and that kind of diminishes the reality of oceans between us. Whenever I feel down, I reach out to him. Whenever I feel confused I seek his advice. Whatever happens in my life, he is the first person I talk to. My son is the only one on my speed dial. Being there for one another on the phone when he is in New York is the continuation of our life in Lahore. We talk like we have always been talking.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_6'&gt;Talking to my only son every day is something I so deeply value I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I say a heartfelt thank-you to Allah all the time. It makes me think of all those mothers who are unable to talk to their sons, their daughters, their loved ones.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_7'&gt;I feel myself go silent. I try to imagine their pain. What is it like to not know where your child is? How does it feel to not be able to pick up the phone and hear your child&amp;rsquo;s voice? I wish I&amp;rsquo;m there to arrange things in his new apartment. What keeps me going is the knowledge that he is in a safe place, he studies at a great school, he has wonderful friends, and he loves his life in New York. That makes me think about all those mothers whose sons are in a place that is not happy, that is not safe.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_10'&gt;It makes my mind wander into dark places where their sons, their beloved children, are treated like inconsequential human beings whose lives are of no value. &lt;p id='p_1'&gt;In a hail-worthy move, the Bombay High Court has banned the slaughter of sheep and goats in flats and homes during the forthcoming Eid festivities.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_2'&gt;The order came on July 6, 2019, shortly ahead of Bakrid, which will be celebrated across India on August 12.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_3'&gt;As per an age-old Islamic tradition, Muslims sacrifice a goat on this day.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote class='twitter-tweet'&gt;&lt;p id='p_4' dir='ltr' lang='en'&gt;Bombay HC has banned slaughter of animals in private flats &amp;amp; Housing societies. Over 7,000 permits were issued for Bakrid Sacrifice by BMC; these permission will be invalid after HC order. But the catch here is that the approval should not be granted if the society is located within one-kilometre walking distance from a community space for slaughtering, including a religious slaughtering space.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_7'&gt;The reason given by the bench for the move is that slaughtering in flats, houses and constricted spaces compromises with hygiene and sanitation. In a city that is as densely crowded and congested as Mumbai and where typical residential apartments are small, we do not believe it is possible to make effective arrangements for human, hygienic and safe methods of sacrificial slaughter within a residential flat. Many of these flats are homes for the very old or the very young (or both). There exists, however, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules 2017, notified by the environment ministry, considered highly controversial. Under the Rules, the sale of cattle is banned for slaughter, including for religious purposes. However, goats and poultry are exempted. But the Rules &amp;mdash; and the food safety standards &amp;mdash; do demand that animals must be slaughtered at registered abattoirs and follow certain guidelines.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_15'&gt;Yet, as is the case with every rule in India, even these are not followed, especially in the case of most ritualistic animal sacrifices.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_16'&gt;In 2014, one of the petitions in the Bombay High Court asked for temporary locations for the slaughter of large animals, since the abattoirs are chaotic and unpleasant during the festival. &lt;p id='p_1'&gt;I am proud to be a vegan Muslim.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_2'&gt;When I was a young girl, I stopped eating meat after witnessing the slaughter of a goat for qurbani.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_3'&gt;Many children get very attached to goats kept at home. After all, the animals are loving, mischievous and playful&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; much like human kids. Children often become traumatised when their four-legged companions are killed.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_4'&gt;Islam does not require eating meat. I realised at an early age that all animals desire to live and none wants to be exploited or killed for their eggs, milk or flesh, so I went vegan. Today, I run a vegan restaurant called Earthlings Caf&amp;eacute; in Mumbai. And like other Muslim vegans and vegetarians, I observe Eid al-Adha by distributing vegan food or sacrificing my time to a charity that helps those in need while bringing animals no harm.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_5'&gt;The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him (&lt;em&gt;pbuh&lt;/em&gt;), called for mercy for animals.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_6'&gt;His concern for their treatment is clear throughout the Hadiths and his Sunnah. Six of the &lt;em&gt;Qur'an's sūras&lt;/em&gt; (chapters) are named after animals&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; going vegan aligns well with the principles of Islam.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_7'&gt;After all, cruelty to animals is considered similarly sinful as cruelty to humans: 'A good deed done to an animal is as meritorious as a good deed done to a human being, while an act of cruelty to an animal is as bad as an act of cruelty to a human being' &lt;em&gt;(Mishkat al-Masabih&lt;/em&gt;; Book 6; Chapter 7, 8:178).&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_8'&gt;&lt;img title='ians-492ff3d389dcd4c_080819070658.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/201908/ians-492ff3d389dcd4c_080819070658.jpg' alt='ians-492ff3d389dcd4c_080819070658.jpg' /&gt;&lt;span style='text-align: left; display: block; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; color: #000000;'&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Great advantages: Going vegan means sparing animals and yourself from a host of dangers. He corrected those who abused them and praised the compassionate. Hunting and killing animals for 'sport' is also prohibited&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; and meat is considered detestable if the animal experienced cruelty.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_10'&gt;The practices of using dull knives and butchering animals in view of each other are prohibited in Islam although common in slaughterhouses today.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_11'&gt;The Prophet Muhammad (&lt;em&gt;pbuh&lt;/em&gt;), narrated by Abdallah bin Amru in Bukhari and Muslim collections, said, 'Whoever is kind to the creatures of God, is kind to himself.'&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_12'&gt;This quote rings especially true considering that eating tasty vegan foods spares lives, can maintain and improve one's health and reduces the risk of deadly diseases&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and strokes. The intensive farming of tens of billions of animals each year causes more greenhouse-gas emissions than the entire global transportation industry&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; and a recent report warns that meat and dairy companies are set to surpass the oil industry as the world's biggest polluters.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_15'&gt;That is why the United Nations has called for a global shift towards a vegan diet to combat the worst effects of climate change, which is already devastating India with water shortages, severe flooding, extreme heat, droughts, rising sea levels and more.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_16'&gt;In fact, if everyone went vegan, we could cut global greenhouse-gas emissions by 70% and prevent more than 8 million human deaths resulting from diseases linked to consuming animals by 2050.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_17'&gt;Sacrificing means giving up something that is truly precious to you&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; not an animal that you just buy.
