&lt;p id='p_1'&gt;I am proud to be a vegan Muslim.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_2'&gt;When I was a young girl, I stopped eating meat after witnessing the slaughter of a goat for qurbani.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_3'&gt;Many children get very attached to goats kept at home. After all, the animals are loving, mischievous and playful&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; much like human kids. Children often become traumatised when their four-legged companions are killed.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_4'&gt;Islam does not require eating meat. I realised at an early age that all animals desire to live and none wants to be exploited or killed for their eggs, milk or flesh, so I went vegan. Today, I run a vegan restaurant called Earthlings Caf&amp;eacute; in Mumbai. And like other Muslim vegans and vegetarians, I observe Eid al-Adha by distributing vegan food or sacrificing my time to a charity that helps those in need while bringing animals no harm.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_5'&gt;The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him (&lt;em&gt;pbuh&lt;/em&gt;), called for mercy for animals.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_6'&gt;His concern for their treatment is clear throughout the Hadiths and his Sunnah. Six of the &lt;em&gt;Qur'an's sūras&lt;/em&gt; (chapters) are named after animals&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; going vegan aligns well with the principles of Islam.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_7'&gt;After all, cruelty to animals is considered similarly sinful as cruelty to humans: 'A good deed done to an animal is as meritorious as a good deed done to a human being, while an act of cruelty to an animal is as bad as an act of cruelty to a human being' &lt;em&gt;(Mishkat al-Masabih&lt;/em&gt;; Book 6; Chapter 7, 8:178).&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_8'&gt;&lt;img title='ians-492ff3d389dcd4c_080819070658.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/201908/ians-492ff3d389dcd4c_080819070658.jpg' alt='ians-492ff3d389dcd4c_080819070658.jpg' /&gt;&lt;span style='text-align: left; display: block; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; color: #000000;'&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Great advantages: Going vegan means sparing animals and yourself from a host of dangers. (Photo: IANS)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_9'&gt;The beloved Prophet Muhammad (&lt;em&gt;pbuh&lt;/em&gt;) condemned beating and branding animals. He corrected those who abused them and praised the compassionate. Hunting and killing animals for 'sport' is also prohibited&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; and meat is considered detestable if the animal experienced cruelty.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_10'&gt;The practices of using dull knives and butchering animals in view of each other are prohibited in Islam although common in slaughterhouses today.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_11'&gt;The Prophet Muhammad (&lt;em&gt;pbuh&lt;/em&gt;), narrated by Abdallah bin Amru in Bukhari and Muslim collections, said, 'Whoever is kind to the creatures of God, is kind to himself.'&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_12'&gt;This quote rings especially true considering that eating tasty vegan foods spares lives, can maintain and improve one's health and reduces the risk of deadly diseases&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and strokes. Consuming animals also exposes everyone to the risk of contracting avian flu and other potentially fatal illnesses that result from confining animals to filthy, unhygienic and crowded factory farms.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_13'&gt;&lt;img title='goat4-ians-inside_080819070627.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo/story/embed/201908/goat4-ians-inside_080819070627.jpg' alt='goat4-ians-inside_080819070627.jpg' /&gt;&lt;span style='text-align: left; display: block; font-family: arial; font-size: 12px; color: #000000;'&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Cruel practices: The slaughter of animals for festivals often happens against religious observances. (Photo: IANS)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_14'&gt;Today, environmental scientists warn us that meat, egg, and dairy production is destroying the environment. The intensive farming of tens of billions of animals each year causes more greenhouse-gas emissions than the entire global transportation industry&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; and a recent report warns that meat and dairy companies are set to surpass the oil industry as the world's biggest polluters.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_15'&gt;That is why the United Nations has called for a global shift towards a vegan diet to combat the worst effects of climate change, which is already devastating India with water shortages, severe flooding, extreme heat, droughts, rising sea levels and more.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_16'&gt;In fact, if everyone went vegan, we could cut global greenhouse-gas emissions by 70% and prevent more than 8 million human deaths resulting from diseases linked to consuming animals by 2050.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_17'&gt;Sacrificing means giving up something that is truly precious to you&amp;nbsp;&amp;mdash; not an animal that you just buy. Sacrifice doesn't only mean killing an animal: Why I'm vegan on Eid and every other day

&lt;p id='p_1'&gt;My earliest memory of Vinod Khanna dates back to my childhood, when I would flip through the pages of my father&amp;rsquo;s carefully maintained &lt;em&gt;Filmfare&lt;/em&gt; magazine issues dating back to the 1960s.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_2'&gt;My father used to be a huge fan of Hindi films, and I would later discover an autographed picture of Vinod Khanna from his study one day. Then, he confessed how he was a fan of Khanna through his college days, which coincided with Khanna&amp;rsquo;s peak, and how he would be inspired by Khanna in his choice of attire and hairstyle.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_3'&gt;One of the first Hindi films I remember watching in my childhood was Ravi Chopra&amp;rsquo;s &lt;em&gt;The Burning Train &lt;/em&gt;&amp;nbsp;(1980), which was a multi-starrer with Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Vinod Mehra and Navin Nischol, of course, apart from Khanna among the male leads. Despite Dharmendra&amp;rsquo;s seniority, Khanna was the de facto hero in the film, playing engineer Vinod Verma, the author-backed-role that he performed with finesse.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_4'&gt;&lt;img title='qur1_042717061211.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo//story/embed/201704/qur1_042717061211.jpg' alt='qur1_042717061211.jpg' /&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Vinod Khanna with Feroz Khan. (Credit: YouTube)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_5'&gt;Till date, it remains one of my favourite Hindi films, and when I later came to know that it had an average run at the box office, I could hardly believe the fact.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_6'&gt;In fact, I don&amp;rsquo;t think there&amp;rsquo;s another film apart from &lt;em&gt;Sholay&lt;/em&gt;, from that era, that could have been so technically advanced.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_7'&gt;I also remember watching many of his films on Friday/Saturday nights on Doordarshan during my school days, ranging from blockbusters like &lt;em&gt;Amar Akbar Anthony&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Parvarish&lt;/em&gt;,&lt;em&gt; Muqaddar Ka Sikandar&lt;/em&gt; to &lt;em&gt;Dayavan&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Chandni&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_8'&gt;It is remarkable how he held his own in multi-starrers, especially with Amitabh Bachchan in his prime, and Dharmendra, towards the latter part of his career. He had tremendous screen presence and charisma, and it&amp;rsquo;s a shame that he took a sabbatical at his peak in 1982 for five years.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_9'&gt;Khanna got his first break in films through Sunil Dutt in &lt;em&gt;Man Ka Meet&lt;/em&gt; in 1969 and went on to play character roles and the antagonist in many films. It was Gulzaar&amp;rsquo;s &lt;em&gt;Mere Apne&lt;/em&gt; in 1971 that turned around his career, and soon he became a leading hero.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_10'&gt;&lt;img title='burning_042717061812.jpg' src='https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/dailyo//story/embed/201704/burning_042717061812.jpg' alt='burning_042717061812.jpg' /&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Vinod Khanna with Parveen Babi in &lt;em&gt;The Burning Train&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_11'&gt;By 1972, he was an established star in his own right and his performance in Gulzaar&amp;rsquo;s &lt;em&gt;Achanak&lt;/em&gt; (1973) was as talked about that year as Bachchan&amp;rsquo;s in &lt;em&gt;Zanjeer&lt;/em&gt; and Rishi Kapoor&amp;rsquo;s debut in &lt;em&gt;Bobby&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_12'&gt;Many people do not know that his association with Osho Rajneesh began much before his sabbatical. He was initiated into the cult as early as 1975 and by the end of 70s, he would spend the weekends at Osho's ashram in Pune.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_13'&gt;As Osho had to shift to the United States in the 80s, Khanna decided to quit the film industry and moved to Oregon in the US to join his 'guru'. He called a memorable press conference at Centaur Hotel in 1982, to address a stunned gathering with the announcement that he was quitting films altogether.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_14'&gt;His wife Geetanjali and sons, Rahul (8) and Akshaye (5), were by his side and he disappeared from limelight after that for a period of five years.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_15'&gt;I also recall reading in an interview that the toughest decision he had to make in life was to return to India in 1987, to resume his career and saying 'No' to Osho when he was asked to take care of the Pune Ashram after his return.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_16'&gt;According to many people, if he hadn&amp;rsquo;t quit the film industry at that crucial time, he could have given Amitabh Bachchan a run for his money as he was the only contemporary who managed to hold his own with Bachchan in the frame.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_17'&gt;Although he played what could be described as 'second lead' in many films with Bachchan, Khanna somehow ensured that he got an equal share of the pie.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_18'&gt;Can anyone forget that famous scene in &lt;em&gt;Amar Akbar Anthony&lt;/em&gt; (1977), where a fight sequence between Amar (the character played by Khanna) and Antony (Bachchan) &amp;nbsp;culminates with Bachchan falling unconscious and Khanna carrying the 6-foot-3-inch giant on his shoulders? That one scene will linger on in anyone&amp;rsquo;s memory even if you have watched the film just once.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_19'&gt;After making a comeback in 1987 with back-to-back hits, his career got a second wind when Feroz Khan cast him as the hero in the 1988 superhit &lt;em&gt;Dayavaan&lt;/em&gt; with Madhuri Dixit as the female lead. That performance was hugely appreciated and &lt;em&gt;Chandni&lt;/em&gt; (1989) directed by Yash Chopra was also a blockbuster in the latter part of his career.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_20'&gt;He launched his younger son Akshaye as a hero in 1997, shortly after his own career as a lead hero came to an end in the mid-nineties, and in the same year, he joined politics.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_21'&gt;In 1998, he contested as the BJP candidate from Gurdaspur and defeated the incumbent five-time Congress MP to win the election. He retained his seat in 1999 and 2004.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_22'&gt;In 2002, he was made the minister of state for tourism in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee&amp;rsquo;s government and then had a stint as the junior minister in the external affairs ministry.&amp;nbsp; He lost his seat in 2009 to Congressman Partap Singh Bajwa by a slim margin of less than 8,000 votes, though he avenged his defeat in 2014 by trouncing the latter with more than a lakh votes.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_23'&gt;Millennials &amp;mdash; who may have watched Khanna only in films like &lt;em&gt;Wanted&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Dabangg &amp;mdash;&lt;/em&gt; could watch his films like &lt;em&gt;The Burning Train&lt;/em&gt; or &lt;em&gt;Qurbani&lt;/em&gt; to realise his calibre as an actor. &lt;p id='p_1'&gt;Today is the holiest day in the Muslim calendar. It marks the 'festival of the sacrifice', known as Eid al-Adha or Baqr Eid, celebrated at the end of Hajj.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_2'&gt;Eid al-Azha has great spiritual significance. It is a celebration of Prophet Ibrahim's total surrender to God's will. When God asked him to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, went so far as to bring his beloved child to the metaphorical sacrificial block.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_3'&gt;However, Prophet Ibrahim's son was replaced by a lamb which got sacrificed instead. It was merely the intention of sacrifice that God required.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_4'&gt;'It is not their flesh, nor their blood, that reaches Allah; but your devotion will reach Him.' (Quran 2:196; 2:28. 35 -37)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_5'&gt;Its significance is obvious. God is clearly telling Muslims that it is not the sacrifice which will please God, but their 'devotion'.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_6'&gt;Unfortunately, it is this very dimension that is missing in today's festivities. The two million animals that were sacrificed in Saudi Arabia at the end of Hajj yesterday had been brought to the country in most horrible conditions, many of them dying en route.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_10'&gt;I personally witnessed the torture animals go through when I was in Karachi on Baqr Eid, a few years ago. The whole city appeared to have turned into a slaughterhouse.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_11'&gt;One could hear the cries of goats and sheep for days before Eid, while they were still being traded in city squares and even in roundabouts on major arterial roads.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_12'&gt;The animals apparently knew what fate was awaiting them. It was the obscenity of the whole scene that I cannot forget. Baqr Eid, the holiest of days, had descended into an orgy of blood-letting, with the 'devotion' that God requires completely missing.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_13'&gt;The callousness we Muslims display towards animals would give the impression that the religion of Islam is indifferent to the fate of animals.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_14'&gt;In fact, Islam requires Muslims to protect, not just human rights, but huqooqul ibaad or the rights of all creations of God.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_15'&gt;Huqooqul ibaad is considered so important that it is given primacy even over huqooq Allah or our duties towards God. While God may forgive us for our transgressions, given his Benevolent and Merciful nature, His creations will not even recognise us on the Day of Judgement.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_16'&gt;So we must fulfil our duties towards creations of God in this very world, since we cannot hope for forgiveness from them on the Day of Judgement.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_17'&gt;Muslims should also remember the conduct of the Prophet in treating animals with kindness. On many occasions, during his journeys, he delayed prayers for the sake of first relieving the animals of their burden, and giving them food and water.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_18'&gt;He would refuse to lead prayers until animals were looked after first. He told several stories of people being forgiven all their sins for having shown consideration for a dog or a cat.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_19'&gt;According to Imam Abu Dawud, the Prophet forbade the hitting of animals on their faces and branding them. He also forbade sports based on animal fights.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_20'&gt;Multiple instances of this concern for animals can also be found throughout the Quran. The story of Prophet Salih, told in the Quran (6:73 and 7:77-78), involves the destruction of the Thalmud, a nation whose people killed a she-camel against the express orders of Prophet Salih (pbuh).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_21'&gt;The story of Prophet Noah's Flood, as described in the Quran, clearly states that he was asked to first load a pair of all animals and then his followers.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_22'&gt;Contemporary Muslims clearly need to learn from their scriptures, follow the Prophet, and stop this cruelty to animals.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p id='p_23'&gt;The situation is changing for the better, at least in some places. The blood orgy in Karachi is having a salutary effect. Some people in Pakistan have stopped sacrificing animals and started giving money to charity on the advice of some Islamic scholars.
