Honor 10 Lite vs Realme U1: Which is the best phone for selfies on a budget?

The sub-brand of the Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has kickstarted the year on a strong note with the launch of the Honor 10 Lite that it hopes will help it win over the fast-expanding budget segment of the market.

The segment is currently flush with great options and as such, it is one of the most hotly contested in the market.

Phones like the Redmi Note 6 Pro, Zenfone Max Pro M2 and the Realme U1 are all devices that are sure to give the Honor phone a good run for its money.

But today, we'll compare the 10 Lite to the Realme U1 and see how the phone fares against this established competitor announced in late November last year.

Design and display

In terms of design and display, both phones are pretty much in line with the times and bring with them waterdrop notch displays, held together by beautiful, yet sturdy frames.

However, there are slight differences.

While the Honor 10 Lite comes with a 6.2-inch panel, the U1 brings a slightly bigger 6.3-inch display running the same FullHD+ resolution that the competing phone runs.

Both the devices use plastic on the back. However, it's the Honor 10 Lite's treatment of the plastic that makes it look more premium of the two. In fact, Honor has done such good work here that looking at the phone, you'll be hard pressed to believe that it's glass and not plastic that covers the phone's back.

The Realme U1 too uses a sophisticated process that sees Realme using 13 layers of sectional lamination to create the rear panel.

From a distance, this makes it look like a premium glass back device. However, holding the phone in your hands does shatter the illusion.

Specs and performance

Both the phones bring with them above-par specifications for the price.

While the Honor 10 Lite is powered by a Kirin 710 SoC paired with 4GB/6GB RAM, and 64GB storage, the Realme U1 brings with it Helio P70 octa-core SoC with upto 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.

The two phones also differ in the operating system onboard – Android 9 Pie-based EMUI 9 on the Honor 10 Lite, as opposed to the much cleaner ColorOS installed on the Realme U1.

Cameras

Coming to the cameras, the Honor 10 Lite brings with it an AI-backed dual camera set-up at the back – a 13MP + 2MP configuration. The primary lens gets a f/1.8 aperture and PDAF.

The Realme U1 also offers a 13MP + 2MP configuration. However, the primary sensor here gets only an f.2.2 aperture.

The two phones also go big on the selfie game.

On the front, the 10 Lite brings a 24MP Sony IMX 576 sensor while the U1 brings a 25MP lens.

Battery

Both phones are also quite comparable when it comes to the battery. While the Honor 10 Lite gets a 3400mAh pack, the Realme U1 gets a battery that is 100mAh bigger.

The two also get speed charge and overall, both phones provide good battery life that is sure to get you through the day. Honor also provides some aggressive power saving modes that can give you some extra hours of run-time when your phone is running low on juice.

Price and availability

In terms of the price, the Honor 10 Lite comes out as the winner.

As opposed to the Realme U1 which starts at Rs 11,999 for the 3GB+32GB variant and goes up to Rs 14,499 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant, the Honor 10 Lite starts at Rs 13,999 for the entry-level 4GB RAM+64GB storage variant and Rs 17,999 for the 6GB RAM+128 GB one.
