What would you rather buy: Redmi 4 or Moto G5 Plus?

Midrange smartphones are selling like hotcakes. Of course, you will always have a soft spot for your Samsung S8, Google Pixel and iPhones, but there is no denying that the majority goes for the midrange devices, because they are affordable and have decent specs.

The problem is that there are more midrange devices in the market as compared to flagship devices: it makes choosing a smartphone difficult. A phone that has better hardware may not have expandable memory. A phone that aces in the camera function may just not be as sturdy when it comes to the processor. Add to that the fact that all of them are priced competitively. It is a problem of plenty.

The conundrum that most people seem to be having with midrange phones, at this moment, is choosing between the Moto G5 Plus and the Xiaomi Redmi 4.

Both devices have their own merits and demerits, but which one should you go for? Let’s find out:

The successor of Redmi 3S, the Redmi 4 is officially out in India. The phone that has three variants (in terms of RAM and internal memory) is a fairly decent player, one that Xiaomi has been exceedingly efficient at producing.

The Redmi 4 has a 5-inch 720p display, and boasts a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front-facing camera. It is powered by a 1.4GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor clubbed with Adreno 505 GPU, and available in three RAM options: 2GB, 3GB and 4GB.

On the other hand, Moto G5 Plus sports a 5.2-inch 1080p display. On the camera front, Moto does a fantastic job. The 12MP rear camera uses a Sony-made image sensor that is large. The G5 Plus also has a very bright F1.7 lens, similar to the F1.7 lens in Galaxy S7, although the quality of the lens could be different. The 5MP front camera works well as well.

The RAM variants have corresponding internal memory options. Quite simply, the 2GB RAM variant will come with 16GB of internal memory, the 3GB RAM Redmi 4 variant will come with 32GB RAM and the model with 4GB RAM will come with 64GB of internal memory. The Redmi 4 is backed by a 4,100mAh battery.

In terms of RAM, the Moto G5 Plus has 2/3/4GB RAM and 32/64GB internal storage. It is powered by the Snapdragon 625. The G5 Plus loses out on the battery. With a 3000 mAh battery, it is a whole 1100 mAh less than the Redmi. But a better processor does help. The Snapdragon 625 functions smoothly, making the smaller battery look like less of a big deal.

The Redmi 4 runs an Android Marshmallow-based UI: the MIUI 8 and supports 4G (VoLTE). With a full metal body design and physical capacitive keys below the display, Redmi 4 looks a lot like Redmi Note 4. Unlike the Redmi, Moto runs on Android 7.0 (Nougat), which is definitely an advantage.

Even in terms of pricing, the phone is quite a delight. For Rs 6,999, you get Redmi 4 with 2GB RAM and 16GB memory. The 3GB RAM and 32GB memory variant will cost you Rs 8,999. And for Rs 10,999, Redmi 4 will have a 4GB RAM and 64GB memory version.

Of course, the price game changes everything for Moto. While it is a great midrange device, Rs 14,999 for 3GB/16GB and Rs 16,999 for 4GB/32GB seems like a bit much.

If we talk about specs, the Moto is the superior device. But it deos not feel like a value-for-money device like Redmi 4.

Ultimately, the deciding factor is if you, the consumer, prefer a good deal over a superior device.
