What's Mobile World Congress and what to expect from it

The calendar's biggest trade show for everything mobiles is barely days away and the tech industry is already buzzing in anticipation of all the blockbuster announcements that will be made in Barcelona starting next week. The Mobile World Congress (MWC), which, on average, attracts more than 1,00,000 people, is expected to get bigger and better in 2018.

Between February 26 and March 1, a number of top players will queue up at MWC 2018 to unveil their flagship smartphones for the year. Here's taking a look at the most anticipated ones.

Galaxy S9 and S9+

Arguably the two most anticipated phones to be announced at MWC 2018, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are all set to be unveiled at the Samsung's Unpacked event on February 25. The two phones are expected to feature improved specs — a 5.8-inch display on the S9 and 6.2-inch one on the S9+. Both the phones will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 (Exynos 9810 systems-on-chip in the rest of the world).

However, the biggest addition will be the inclusion of a new camera setup. "Samsung Electronics will showcase the next generation of Galaxy devices that reimagines the camera and redefines the way you share your moments," said the electronics giant in a statement.

Besides motion-detected “super slow-mo” video capture, the devices will also feature variable aperture on their primary 12-megapixel cameras, allowing the phone to switch between f/2.4 and smallest-in-class f/1.5 aperture mechanically.

Nokia 9 and 3310 4G

Nokia was at the centre of things at Mobile World Congress earlier in 2017. The Finnish company launched a number of smartphones at the event, but its reboot of the 3310 — the indestructible phone from our childhood that came with Snake installed — ended up hogging all the limelight.

Though it might not be the same this year, but the expected announcements of the Nokia 3310 4G and the Nokia 9 could again make MWC a happy hunting ground for the smartphone maker. Though the former with its 4G capabilities could make a dent in the newly created smart feature phone segment, it's the latter that can have a greater impact on the fortunes of the company in 2018.

Reports suggest this new flagship device, the Nokia 9, could sport a futuristic display along with a revamped camera module and an improved camera setup.

LG V30+ 2018

Not to be left behind, South Korean smartphone maker LG is set to unveil at the show an upgraded variant of its popular phone, the LG V30+. According to reports, the V30+ 2018 will have "a suite of AI technologies" including automatic scene recognition for photos, a broader range of voice commands, and low-light photography that's twice as bright.

Sony Xperia Z Premium 2

Another big name player looking to make an impact the event will be Sony.

Rumours suggest that this impact could come in the form of Sony Xperia XZ Premium 2 at MWC 2018. The phone is expected to bring with it flagship level specs along with a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 6GB of RAM, a dual-lens rear camera and front-facing stereo speakers.

There's also news that the Xperia XZ Premium 2 might have a 5.7-inch 4K display, a 3,420mAh battery and - perhaps most excitingly of all - a whole new design, with smaller bezels.
