OnePlus 5T set to launch: What rumours have to say

Much to the despair of many, Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus is all set to bring to the market an updated 5T model barely six months after the launch of the existing flagship – the OnePlus 5. Despite the fact that the 5 has been one of the biggest success stories of the year, OnePlus' decision to phase it out after such a short run will make many buyers unhappy.

Regardless of the sad faces, the device, which has been teased for a while now, will finally be unveiled to the world on November 16 at a glittering launch event in New York. The company has said that the 5T will go on sale in the US and Europe on November 21 and will be available in India too on the same day via a flash sale, with wider availability at offline stores starting November 28.

The smartphone is expected to bring with it a new design scheme and also some enhancements to the internals. Here’s a round-up of all the rumours about the phone.

Move to an edge-to-edge display

The current generation OnePlus 5 comes with the same 1080p panel found in the previous generation 3T. The display on the phone was 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED capable of pumping out 401 pixels per inch.

However, if reports and the teasers shared by the company are anything to go by, the next OnePlus handset will see the smartphone maker ditch the trusted panel for a bigger and better display. The OnePlus 5T is expected to be the first device from the company to feature a Quad HD panel. But the company won't just stop there.

The display will also be bigger at six inches; however, it will not reflect on the phone's overall size as this new panel will be more in line with the 18:9 edge-to-edge bezel-less displays found on the likes of LG-V30, iPhone X, and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2.

Design

There are going to be slight changes to the design too, but overall the OnePlus is expected to keep things same in the department. The OnePlus 5T is expected to sport an aluminium unibody chassis and have bottom-firing speakers with the 3.5mm jack again finding a place on the device.

However, owing to the phone sporting a new 18:9 and possibly 6-inch display, it will look and feel like a major upgrade in the design department – a fact that may not go down too well with existing OnePlus 5 buyers.

Under the hood

Unlike the last mid-cycle release by OnePlus, the 5T is not expected to differ too much from its predecessor. The phone is expected to bring with it the same 835 Snapdragon SoC, 6/8GB RAM and 64/128GB storage options. However, there are suggestions that the picture taking prowess of the new phone may surpass the 5's because of the use of an upgraded camera module on the new smartphone.

Leaks have suggested that the OnePlus 5T’s setup may features two 20MP sensors, instead of the 20MP+16MP setup currently being used in the OnePlus 5.

The modest 3300mAh battery pack on the phone is also likely to get a bump and be upgraded to 3450mAh.

Price

Even though pretty much everything else about 5T is known, confusion remains over the price of the phone. As per reports, the OnePlus 5T could come to the market with a similar price tag – Rs 32,999 for the base model – as the current generation flagship.

The information has been leaked by TechRadar in the UK which found confidential documents that reveal the OnePlus 5T will sell at OnePlus 5 prices in that country. If the report is indeed true, it will be safe to assume that the Indian arm of the company will also mirror the pricing decision and bring the phone to the domestic market for the same price its predecessor was launched.
