Best smartphones to take a selfie

Smartphones today have become multi-functional devices that not only help us stay in touch with the world, but are also expected to be our daily drivers for multimedia and photography needs. The latter, especially, has been the focus of smartphone makers who — over the past couple of years — have packed devices with powerful camera sensors in order to make these portable computers our preferred choice for clicking pictures.

To help things along, improvements in camera sensors have further allowed smartphones to outperform even dedicated point-and-shoot cameras, leading to an increase in the usage of these handheld devices as photography drivers. But this camera-phone revolution isn't just for the photography enthusiast. 2017 has seen the ignored selfie camera too getting some much-needed love. So without further ado, here are the best phones available in the market right now for clicking selfies.

Vivo V7+ with 24-megapixel selfie shooter

To kick things off is Vivo's V7+, a phone that does not impress much when it comes to the specs – IPS "FullView" 5.99-inch HD (720x1440 pixels) 2.5D curved glass display, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of inbuilt storage – but truly shines when we switch our focus towards the phone's front camera.

The phone comes packing a 16-megapixel rear camera with a f/2.0 aperture and dual-LED flash, which pales in comparison to the device's front shooter – a 24-megapixel front camera with a f/2.0 aperture, 1/2.78-inch sensor supplemented by what Vivo calls the "Moonlight Glow" soft selfie light.

The Vivo V7+ running the Funtouch OS 3.2 based on Android 7.1 Nougat, however, does not come cheap at Rs 21,990, but the phone owing to the inclusion of the high megapixel count sensor at the front produces good results and should be considered if you're looking for a device to click selfies.

Xiaomi Redmi Y1

Xiaomi's latest budget phone, the Redmi Y1, is a device that was launched in the country in two variants – 3GB RAM and 32GB storage at Rs 8,999, while the second variant comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage for Rs 10,999. Both the variants are powered by octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 SoC. The phone comes with 5.5-inch HD (720p) display which is protected using a curved 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3 sheet on the front.

The device for the price is great value for money, but what makes it an even sweeter deal is the 16-megapixel front camera module with LED flash. The selfie camera promises to capture good pictures in low light conditions and comes with features like Beautify 3.0 which to improve the good selfies.

Oppo F5

Next in the list is a selfie-centric phone from Oppo. The F5 launched at an event in Mumbai comes with a 6-inch TFT display with a full-HD+ display with a screen resolution of 1080x2160 pixels. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core MediaTek (MT6763T) processor paired with 4GB/6GB RAM and 32GB/64GB internal memory.

The device's front camera comes with a 20-megapixel sensor that Oppo claims is backed by AI-powered beautification technology.

"With more than 200 positioning spots, the F5 accentuates your facial landmarks and contours to enhance the symmetry between features like your eyes, nose, cheekbones, and jawline to create the perfectly refined and natural selfie. Its beauty-iris tool ensures that your eyes will shine brighter in any photo."

Additionally, the front camera of the Oppo F5 is capable of capturing bokeh pictures as well. The back camera comes with a 16-megapixel sensor. There's also an LED flash for improving low-light photography.

Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro

The Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro is a device that comes to the table with above-par specs and a front camera module that, at least on paper, looks to be a winner. Priced at Rs 23,999, the Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is powered by a 2.0GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor clubbed with Adreno 506 GPU. The phone comes with 4GB RAM onboard and 64GB of internal storage.

The device brings with it a 16-Megapixel camera at the back, and to justify its name, packs a dual camera system (24MP plus 5MP) at the front. The primary lens here is a Sony IMX362 with an f1.8 aperture. The dual camera system on-board the front of the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro further comes with PDAF, a soft flash and is capable of shooting in 4K.

OnePlus 5

Launched on June 20, 2017, at a glittering event in New York, the OnePlus 5 carries forward the legacy of being a flagship killer and, as such, has been equipped with the tools to do so.

A high-end flagship at a price of Rs 32,999 for the 6GB RAM with 64GB storage variant, the phone packs pretty much the same dual camera module found on the iPhone 7 Plus. In terms of numbers, the dual camera set-up boasts of a 16-megapixel Sony unit with an f/1.7 aperture lens and a 20-megapixel Sony telephoto lens with a f/2.6 aperture.

However, it's not only the rear camera on the phone that impresses. OnePlus also brings with it a 16-Megapixel front shooter that is equipped with Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) for clicking good selfies.
