These are truly exciting times for the smartphone industry in the country. With over 300 million Android users, 2017 has seen India become the second biggest market for smartphones in the world. This is largely because of the strong sales we've seen in the budget and mid-segment of the market.

The sub-20k smartphone segment has especially emerged as the most competitive space for smartphones in the country with most devices bringing with them a good balance between features and price. So if you find yourself struggling to nail down on the phone of your choice, then read on to know our recommendation of the five best smartphones you can get for Rs 20,000 or less right now.

Moto G5s Plus

Launched earlier in August, the Moto G5s Plus to date remains one of the very best devices that you can buy if you're on a budget. Available for Rs 15,999 the Moto G5 Plus is a great deal for the price as it brings with it a 5.2inch Full-HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor SoC paired with 4GB RAM and 16/32GB internal memory expandable up to 128GB.

The camera module on board is also above par - a 13MP+13MP rear camera with an aperture of f/1.7 and dual-pixel autofocus - which can click good pictures even under low light. There's also an 8MP front camera to complete the package.

Xiaomi Mi A1

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is a device that boasts of flagship worthy specs, but fits nicely in the budget segment with a price tag of Rs 14,999. The phone borrows from Xiaomi's DNA when it comes to the design. Crafted using a metal unibody design with chamfered edges in three colour variants - Rose Gold, Black and Gold - the phone is thus easy on the eyes.

At the front, the Mi A1 comes sporting Xiaomi's trusted 5.5-inch 1080p display protected by a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass sheet that has previously been seen on phones like the Redmi Note 4.

Xiaomi has also equipped the phone with great internals as it comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM. There is 64GB of storage provided onboard which can be expanded using a MicroSD card. The battery that's keeping the system running here is a 3080mAh, but is a non-removable pack.

There's a 12-Megapixel + 12-Megapixel dual camera setup at the back and a 5-Megapixel camera at the front. However, the phone's biggest draw is the fact is that it is an Android One phone and as such guarantees a close to stock Android experience on the phone.

Nokia 6

The Nokia 6 sport a 403 PPI 5.5-inch Full-HD IPS display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. Under the hood, the phone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat powered by Snapdragon 430 processor coupled with 3GB RAM. The handset comes with 32GB inbuilt storage, support microSD cards of up to 128GB, and houses a 3000mAh battery and a fingerprint scanner underneath the display.

On the optics front, the Nokia 6 sports a 16MP rear sensor with f/2.0 aperture and phase detection autofocus, while the front camera sports an 8MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture. It also comes with a stereo speaker grille powered by Dolby Atmos technology.

Mi Max 2

The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is a device, which promises to bring some cheer to the increasingly shrinking phablets segment of the market. But even if it fails on that front, it still remains a great option for those looking for a big display phone within the Rs 20,000 segment.

The device comes with a massive 6.44-inch 1080p display powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM hidden neatly under the hood. The package gets its juice from a massive 5300 mAh battery that Xiaomi promises is good enough for watching videos for up to 18 hours, 10 days of music playback, nine hours of gaming, and up to 57 hours of talk time.

Priced at Rs 15,999, this is a phone that should definitely be considered in the price range.

Lenovo K8 Note

The Lenovo K8 Note is another strong contendor for the crown in the list. The phone has a Helio X23 chipset with a 2.3GHz deca-core processor and a Mali T-880 MP4 GPU. It is also accompanied by a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 px display with a pixel density of 441ppi and a Corning Gorilla Glass with oleophobic coating for scratch resistance. The smartphone is powered by a 4,000mAh battery with turbo charge. The device has two variants – 3GB RAM with 32GB onboard storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB onboard storage, which is expandable up to 128GB via a microSD card.

In terms of cameras, the Lenovo K8 Note has a 13MP+ 5MP Samsung dual camera setup at the back. There's another 13MP camera with LED flash and an f/2.0 aperture on the front of the device above the display.

Priced at Rs 12,999, the phone is great value for the money.
